Milan Malpensa is one of the busiest airports in Italy and one of its biggest car rental markets: on a typical low-season week, more than 1,400 offers compete for your booking. That much choice helps and hurts at the same time. There are two terminals, desks one floor below arrivals, shuttle companies with offices in nearby towns, deposits of 200 to 1,000 EUR for similar cars, with none at Locauto (only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), and motorways that lead straight to Switzerland, the lakes and Milan’s Area C congestion charge. This guide to car rental at Milan Malpensa Airport sorts it out: the ten companies rated 8.0 or higher that we recommend, who takes a debit card, where each desk is, what the deposit will be, what a day costs in each month, and the driving rules that send fines home weeks after the trip. The supplier data comes from our daily work on Milan requests and was checked offer by offer in October 2026.
Data last verified: October 2026. Written by Simas Krasaitis, founder of Autorentwiz and former head of car rental at ADCRent.
Short on time? The key facts:
- Debit cards: seven of the ten companies we recommend accept them: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Alamo, Enterprise and National (500 EUR), Flizzr (about 500 EUR), Sixt (400-1,000 EUR) and Dollar (700 EUR)
- Credit card only: Sicily by Car, RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent
- Revolut and other online-only bank cards: none of the ten accepts them, and neither prepaid, virtual or phone-wallet cards
- No deposit: Locauto (only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation), desk in Terminal 1
- No card at all: some offers need no card at pick-up. Message us and we will look for them for your dates
- Where the desks are: eight of the ten are in Terminal 1, level -1, open 07:00-23:59. easyJet passengers in Terminal 2 use the rental area next to Terminal 2 or the free 24/7 shuttle to Terminal 1
- Landing late: the two shuttle companies close at 20:00. After that, pick a Terminal 1 company
- Prices: the cheapest month is November (about 19 EUR a day on average), the most expensive is July (about 43 EUR)
- Switzerland: all ten allow it, free or for 30-72 EUR, but you need a Swiss motorway vignette (CHF 40) that Italian rental cars normally do not have
- Milan centre: Area C costs 7,50 EUR a day, Monday to Friday, 07:30-19:30. The A36 Pedemontana motorway has no toll booths and must be paid online
- Free consultation: message us on Messenger and our car rental experts will compare all ten companies for your dates, card and landing time. You get the same discount as when you book through our search

Car rental at Milan Malpensa Airport: the ten companies we recommend
We recommend companies rated 8.0 or higher by verified renters. At Malpensa ten pass that test, from international brands to local companies with offices near the airport. In our Milan requests, close to 6 in 10 people who told us their card type had only a debit card, so the card column matters as much as the price.

Car rental deposits at Milan Malpensa Airport by company

Locauto is the easy first choice: no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation, debit cards accepted (Maestro is the exception), a desk in Terminal 1 open until midnight, and free travel to 29 countries including Switzerland. It is also behind almost every no-deposit result at Malpensa, so in busy months it sells out early. Alamo shares the top rating, takes debit cards too, blocks 500 EUR and charges no cross-border fee. Sicily by Car has the lowest real credit-card deposit at the airport, 200 EUR, with free travel to 19 countries including Switzerland, but the credit card must be in the main driver’s name. To compare these deposits with other Italian airports, see our deposit table for car rental in Italy.
Enterprise and National work from the same rental area in Terminal 1, take debit cards, block 500 EUR and allow free travel to 29 and 33 countries. Flizzr also takes debit cards, with a deposit of about 500 EUR; travel abroad costs 50 EUR, needs written permission, and any country not on its list is forbidden. Sixt suits drivers who want something special: plenty of premium cars and debit cards accepted, but the deposit grows with the car class, from about 400 EUR on a compact (around 540 EUR in our search) to 1,000 EUR on bigger cars. Dollar has no desk of its own: its cars are handed over at the Hertz desk in Terminal 1, which confuses many first-time renters. Pick-up there can be slow, but Dollar often has good prices and is a useful plan B when Locauto and Alamo are sold out.
RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent work from offices outside the airport and take you there by free shuttle. Both need a credit card, both block more (700 EUR and 600-1,000 EUR), and both close at 20:00. They can be cheaper, but they only make sense for daytime landings. Their pick-up instructions are in the next section.
Here is how one customer described renting a car in Italy with our help:
“I highly recommend it, everything went quickly and smoothly when we rented a car in Italy.”

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2: where to pick up your rental car at Malpensa
Malpensa has two terminals about 15 minutes apart by shuttle. Terminal 1 handles almost all flights, while Terminal 2 serves easyJet. Almost every rental desk inside the airport is in Terminal 1, so the terminal you land in decides how your first half hour goes. Your voucher shows which terminal your company uses.
Terminal 1: rental desks on level -1
After baggage claim, follow the “Rent a Car” signs down to level -1. Locauto, Alamo, Sicily by Car, Flizzr, Enterprise, National, Sixt and the Hertz desk that serves Dollar are all there, open from 07:00 to 23:59. When several long-haul flights land together, queues of 40 minutes or more are common. Offers with online check-in shorten the time at the counter, and our checklist for a smooth car rental pick-up covers the rest.
Terminal 2 (easyJet): rental area or free shuttle to Terminal 1
Leave arrivals, keep left and follow the signs to the railway station: the car rental area is inside the building next to Terminal 2. National also has a desk there. If your company has no desk there, take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 1. It runs 24 hours a day, every 7-15 minutes during the day and about every 30 minutes at night, and the ride takes about 15 minutes. In Terminal 2 the stop is near the railway station; in Terminal 1 it is on level -1, by the Sheraton hotel. Current timetables are on the official Malpensa Airport website.
Shuttle companies: RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent
RentalPlus: call +39 0331 1587042 when you have your bags. In Terminal 1 the meeting point is arrivals Exit 5, where a 9-seater van with the RentalPlus logo collects you. In Terminal 2 it is outside the BPM bank branch, between arrivals and the return area. WhatsApp: +39 389 120 4661. The office is in Cardano al Campo and is open 08:00-20:00.
Last Minute Rent: write on WhatsApp to +39 349 452 7271 when you land. The shuttle takes you to the Galdieri Rent office at Via Europa 90, Lonate Pozzolo, open 08:00-20:00.
Reviews of shuttle companies around Malpensa often mention waits of an hour or more and meeting points that are hard to find. Call or write as soon as you land, and save the phone numbers on your phone before the flight.
Landing late? Choose a Terminal 1 company
Both shuttle offices close at 20:00, and some off-airport companies charge a night fee for later pick-ups (75 EUR after 23:01 at one of them). If your flight is due after 19:00, or could be delayed, book a company with a desk in Terminal 1, open until 23:59.
Returning the car
Follow the “Car Rental Return” signs for your terminal. Fill the tank before the last kilometres, then photograph the fuel gauge, the mileage and the car from all sides. With a shuttle company, allow at least 30 extra minutes for the ride back to the terminal.
Can I rent a car at Malpensa with a debit card?
Yes. Seven of the ten companies we recommend accept debit cards: Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, Flizzr, Sixt and Dollar, all in Terminal 1. Sicily by Car, RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent need a credit card. Three rules apply to every debit card: it must be a physical card in the main driver’s name, it needs enough free balance for the deposit, and the deposit stays blocked for the whole rental. Locauto does not accept Maestro. More detail is in our guide to renting a car in Italy with a debit card.
Revolut and other online-only bank cards
None of the ten companies accepts cards from online-only banks at Malpensa. Their rental conditions exclude these together with prepaid cards, virtual cards, phone wallets and cards not in the main driver’s name.
Car rental at Milan Malpensa Airport with no deposit
Locauto asks for no deposit at Malpensa: only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation at pick-up, debit cards accepted, desk in Terminal 1. Every no-deposit offer we found at this airport was a Locauto offer. When you book, payment is made by card. Some offers, however, need no card at all at pick-up. If you have no card for the desk, message us and we will look for these offers for your dates.
Desk insurance or full coverage at Malpensa?
Every car rental price in Italy includes basic insurance, but with an excess: the amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. You can cover that excess in two ways. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheaper option: the deposit is still blocked, you pay for any damage first, and you get the money back afterwards. The rental company’s own insurance at the desk removes the excess directly and can lower the deposit, but it costs the most. Reviews of some budget companies around Malpensa describe pressure to buy desk insurance or to accept a different car than booked. If you already have full coverage, you can say no. Film the car at pick-up and at return, and if a dispute starts, message us with the contract. We support you before, during and after the rental.
How much does car rental at Milan Malpensa Airport cost?
Malpensa is cheap outside summer. The average price across all offers runs from about 19 EUR a day for November pick-ups to about 43 EUR a day in July, and November comes out about 46% below the yearly average of about 35 EUR. Most rentals here last 6 to 8 days, and bookings peak in June and October.

Extras at Malpensa: child seats, extra drivers, young drivers and winter tyres
- Child seats: Italian law requires a child seat or booster for children under 150 cm. Add seats when you book, not at the desk: they are charged per day, and in summer the stock runs out
- Additional drivers: every extra driver must come to the desk with a driving licence. Most companies charge a daily fee, for example 5 EUR per day plus VAT at National
- Young drivers: drivers under 25 usually pay a daily surcharge, and some car classes need an older driver. Enter the real driver age when you search, so the price already includes it
- Winter tyres: from 15 November to 15 April many roads in Lombardy and the routes to the Alps require winter tyres or snow chains on board. Ask for winter equipment when you book a winter trip to the mountains
Driving from Malpensa: Area C, tolls, Switzerland and the lakes
Malpensa lies about 50 km north-west of central Milan, close to Lake Maggiore and within easy reach of the Swiss border. That makes it a great start for a road trip, and it also means three rules that catch visitors: Milan’s traffic zones, a motorway without toll booths, and the Swiss vignette.
Milan’s Area C and Area B

Area C covers Milan’s historic centre inside the ring of the old city walls. It is active Monday to Friday, 07:30-19:30, except public holidays; at weekends entry is free. Entry costs 7,50 EUR per day and must be paid by midnight of the same day; a late ticket costs 22,50 EUR within 7 days. If you do not pay, the fine of 80-335 EUR reaches you through the rental company, which adds its own admin fee. Inside Area C, the Quadrilatero della Moda fashion district is closed to traffic 24 hours a day. Area B covers almost the whole city as a low-emission zone with the same hours, and modern rental cars (petrol and Euro 6 diesel) can enter it. Milan changes these rules every 1 October, so check the official Area C page of the City of Milan before you drive in. The easiest plan is to park outside Area C and take the metro to the centre.
Motorway tolls: the A8/A9 and the A36 Pedemontana
The A8 and A9 motorways towards Milan, Varese, Como and the Swiss border use an open toll system: you pay a fixed amount at the toll barriers, by card or cash. Avoid the yellow Telepass lanes, which are only for cars with a toll device. The A36 Pedemontana works differently: it has no toll booths at all. Cameras read the number plate and you must pay online before the deadline (about 3,30 EUR for the stretch between the A8 and the A9). If you do not, the rental company receives the fine and passes it on with its admin fee. Navigation apps can send you onto the A36 between Malpensa and Como, so check your route before you set off.
Driving to Switzerland: buy the vignette
All ten companies allow Switzerland, free or for a fee of 30-72 EUR (see the table above). Swiss motorways require a vignette, and Italian rental cars normally do not have one. It costs CHF 40, exists only as a yearly vignette, and you can buy it as a sticker or as an e-vignette linked to the number plate on the official e-vignette website. Driving on a Swiss motorway without it means a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette. Reseller websites charge about 55 EUR for the same thing, so buy only from the official site, after pick-up, when you know the plate number.
Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Orta

Malpensa is the closest big airport to Lake Maggiore: the lake towns on its southern shore are a short drive away, and Lake Orta and Lake Como are within about an hour. Lake roads are narrow and parking near the water is scarce in summer, so a small car makes the trip easier. Many lake towns have a ZTL in the old centre; park outside it and walk in.
Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo: which Milan airport for car rental?

| Malpensa (MXP) | Linate (LIN) | Bergamo (BGY) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance to Milan centre | about 50 km | about 7 km | about 50 km |
| Good for | Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, Switzerland, long road trips | Short trips into Milan | Bergamo, Lake Iseo, Lake Garda and the east |
| Car rental choice | The widest, over 1,400 offers in a typical low-season week | A smaller rental market | Large, with many low-cost flights |
| Main catch | Two terminals and shuttle companies | Area C starts close to the airport | Busy desks when many flights land together |
Choose the airport by where you are going, not by the flight price alone. For the lakes west of Milan and for Switzerland, Malpensa saves you the drive around the city. Among the Milan-area requests we receive, Bergamo is asked about more often than Malpensa, while Linate is rarely requested. If you do fly into Linate, our Milan Linate Airport guide covers its rental desks, deposits and Area C. About 1 in 10 of our Milan requests is a one-way rental, most often to Bergamo Airport, so flying in to one airport and out of the other works well. Everything about the other airport is in our guide to car rental at Bergamo Airport. If your trip heads further east, to Venice or the Dolomites, our Treviso Airport guide compares the two Venice airports. If your trip heads west, to Turin or Piedmont, our Turin Airport guide compares Turin with Malpensa and Bergamo.

Usually yes. Basic cover is included, but you still pay the excess if the car is damaged or stolen. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheapest way to cover it: it works by refund, and the deposit is still blocked. The rental company’s own insurance at the desk removes the excess directly but costs the most.
Locauto, Alamo, Sicily by Car, Flizzr, Enterprise, National, Sixt and Dollar, which hands over its cars at the Hertz desk. The desks are on level -1 and open from 07:00 to 23:59. RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent work from offices outside the airport and use free shuttles.

For most travellers who land at Malpensa, the airport is the easier choice: eight of the ten companies we recommend have a desk in Terminal 1, open from 07:00 to 23:59. The airport is about 50 km north-west of central Milan. Area C in the centre costs 7,50 EUR a day, Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30. For days in Milan, park outside it and take the metro.
RentalPlus and Last Minute Rent close at 20:00, so book a Terminal 1 company if your flight lands after 19:00. Dollar has no desk of its own, and its cars are handed over at the Hertz desk. At Milan Malpensa Airport, check the deposit in the offer conditions before you book, and film the car from all sides at pick-up. Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on your card. The other companies we recommend block 200 to 1,000 EUR. If you already have full insurance, you do not need to buy the rental company’s insurance at the desk as well.
