Car Rental at Florence Airport (FLR): With a Debit Card, No Deposit and Full Insurance

Florence Airport (FLR), also called Peretola, is a one-terminal airport about 5 km from the centre of Florence, and Piazza del Duomo is about 30 minutes away by car. For one week in November we found 773 rental offers from 29 companies here. The rental desks are not in the terminal: 7 of the 8 companies we recommend are in a rent-a-car building called Palagio degli Spini, which you reach by free shuttle, and of the 8, only Dollar has its desk in the terminal. Seven of the eight accept a debit card, including Locauto, which asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation at pick-up. This guide to car rental at Florence Airport covers each of the 8 companies we recommend, debit and Revolut cards, deposits, prices by month, Florence against Pisa, the airport against the city centre, and what to know before you drive into Florence or out to Chianti, San Gimignano and Siena.

Data last verified: October 2026. Written by Simas Krasaitis, founder of Autorentwiz and former head of car rental at ADCRent.

Short on time? The key facts:

  • Desks: 7 of our 8 companies are in the rent-a-car building on Via Palagio degli Spini, a free shuttle ride of about 3 minutes from the stop outside arrivals. Dollar is the only one with a desk in the terminal
  • Debit cards: 7 of the 8 accept them: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Flizzr (about 450 EUR), SIXT on its regular offers (from about 460 EUR), Alamo, Enterprise and National (500 EUR) and Dollar (700 EUR). Sicily By Car takes credit cards only
  • No deposit: Locauto (only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation), with a debit or credit card. With a credit card, Sicily By Car blocks 200 EUR on small cars
  • Revolut: none of the 8 companies accepts cards from online-only banks, and our November search found no deals without a card at pick-up
  • Opening hours: none of our companies opens before 08:00. Six work until 23:00, Sicily By Car until 22:29 and Dollar until 21:30
  • Prices: January is the cheapest month (about 20 EUR a day on average), September the most expensive (about 55 EUR)
  • City centre: the historic centre of Florence is a ZTL with cameras. Park outside it and walk or take the tram in

Car rental at Florence Airport: the 8 companies we recommend

Florence Airport has a shorter list of strong companies than Pisa. To make our list, a company needs a rating of 8.0 or higher from verified renters at this airport and a separate score of 8.0 or higher for its staff here. Of the 33 companies rated at Florence Airport, 9 passed both, and 8 of them had offers in our November search. Moowerent, rated 8.1, had none. Hertz and Thrifty just missed the list at 7.9, and Maggiore, Europcar and Avis are rated below 8.0 here. The good news for most travellers is the card rule: 7 of our 8 companies accept a debit card. Our car rental in Italy page compares Florence with the other Italian airports.

Car rental deposits at Florence Airport by company

Car rental at Florence Airport (FLR): deposits by company, debit card, desk in the terminal and ferries
Car rental deposits and conditions at Florence Airport, verified October 2026

At Florence, Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up, with no extra cover needed, and the same on its 9-seat Volkswagen Caravelle. Sicily By Car blocks 200 EUR on small cars and 1,000 EUR on its 9-seat Ford Transit, but it wants a credit card. With a debit card, Flizzr blocks about 450 EUR on a Fiat Panda, SIXT from about 460 EUR on its regular offers, and Alamo, Enterprise and National 500 EUR. Dollar blocks 700 EUR, the highest deposit on a small car among our companies, and it also takes a separate fuel deposit at pick-up. For a ferry trip, Locauto, Alamo and National allow the car on board for free, Sicily By Car and Flizzr want written permission, and SIXT charges 50 EUR and wants written permission on its regular offers. Enterprise and Dollar do not allow ferries.

Where are the car rental desks at Florence Airport?

Florence Airport has one terminal, and only Dollar on our list has its desk in it, in the arrivals area. The other seven are in the rent-a-car building called Palagio degli Spini, on Via Palagio degli Spini, in front of the car park and about 350 m from the terminal in a straight line: Locauto, Sicily By Car, Alamo, Enterprise, National and SIXT, with Flizzr at the SIXT branch. You reach the building by a free shuttle bus, as the Florence Airport website also explains:

  • Leave the terminal through the arrivals exit and go to the bus stop in front of it, signed “shuttle bus car rental company”
  • The shuttle runs every 15-20 minutes, and the Flizzr pick-up instructions give its hours as about 05:00 to 23:30, extended for late flights
  • The ride takes about 3 minutes to the rent-a-car building, in front of the car park on Via Palagio degli Spini

Late arrivals and opening hours

At Florence the desks keep the same hours every day of the week, but none of our companies opens before 08:00, so an early morning flight means waiting. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, Flizzr, National and SIXT work from 08:00 to 23:00. Sicily By Car works from 08:30 to 22:29 and Dollar from 08:30 to 21:30. Sicily By Car holds your car for 2 hours after the booked time, Dollar for only 29 minutes, and the others for about an hour. If your flight lands after 21:00, choose one of the companies open until 23:00, and add your flight number to the booking.

Returning the car: the nearest petrol station

The Beyfin station on Viale Giovanni Luder is a few metres from the airport entrance and less than 1 km from the car rental return on Via Palagio degli Spini, about 1 minute by car. It is listed as open 24 hours. Fill up there, because most rental conditions ask for the same fuel level you started with, and the refuelling charge at the desk is much higher than the pump price.

Can I rent a car at Florence Airport with a debit card?

Yes, and the choice is wide: 7 of the 8 companies we recommend accept a debit card. They are Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Flizzr (about 450 EUR), SIXT (from about 460 EUR), Alamo, Enterprise and National (500 EUR) and Dollar (700 EUR). Only Sicily By Car wants a credit card. With SIXT, the debit card applies to its regular offers, so check the card section of the offer you pick.

At the desk you need a physical card in the main driver’s name. Locauto, Alamo and Flizzr do not take Maestro, and Dollar also refuses Visa Electron. In our November search the cheapest car with a debit card among our 8 companies was a Toyota Aygo at Locauto from 96 EUR a week, and the cheapest automatic a Volkswagen Polo at Alamo from 125 EUR. Our guide to renting a car in Italy with a debit card explains what the desk checks.

Renting a car at Florence Airport with a Revolut card

None of the 8 companies we recommend at Florence accepts cards from online-only banks such as Revolut: their rental conditions list these cards as not accepted. Our November search also found no deals without a card at pick-up at Florence Airport. So you need a debit or credit card from a traditional bank in the main driver’s name.

Car rental at Florence Airport with no deposit

Locauto asks for no deposit at Florence, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up. In our search, all 30 offers marked “no deposit” at Florence Airport were Locauto offers, and the 0,01 EUR authorisation also applied to its 9-seat van. Among companies that take a deposit, the lowest is Sicily By Car at 200 EUR on small cars, with a credit card only. With a debit card, the lowest deposit among companies that take one is about 450 EUR at Flizzr. Our guide to saving money on car rental shows how to weigh the deposit against the price.

Desk insurance or full coverage at Florence Airport?

At Florence the excess, the part of any damage you pay yourself, was about 1,200-1,800 EUR on small cars in our search, and up to about 2,800 EUR on vans. Locauto had the lowest, 1,200 EUR on a Toyota Aygo or a Volkswagen Polo. Alamo, Enterprise and National had 1,800 EUR on small cars and 2,800 EUR on the 9-seat Volkswagen Caravelle. You can cover the excess in two ways.

Full coverage added online when you book costs less per day, but the desk still blocks the normal deposit, and if something happens you pay the company and claim the money back from the insurer. The company’s own cover, sold at the desk, costs more but removes the excess on the spot. If you already bought full coverage, you do not need the desk cover as well. Our pick-up tips show how to film the car and what to check at pick-up.

Driver age and driving licence at Florence Airport

These rules come from the rental conditions of the offers we checked at Florence Airport in October 2026, for the 8 companies we recommend. For Alamo, Sicily By Car and the Member deals of SIXT, we used their rental terms, a more general document. The minimum age often goes up with the car class, so check the conditions of your own offer before you book. Send us the driver’s age on Messenger, and we check which offers allow it.

  • Minimum age: 18 at Flizzr and SIXT, on cars up to the Compact class. 19 at Locauto, Enterprise and National on the Toyota Aygo only, in the rental terms of Alamo on the Toyota Aygo and Fiat Panda, and in the rental terms of Sicily By Car on every car in our search. 21 at Dollar, on every car
  • Bigger cars need an older driver: at Locauto, Enterprise and National, and in the rental terms of Alamo, the minimum is 21 from the Economy class up, 25 for larger SUVs, estates and the 9-seat Volkswagen Caravelle, and 27 for the Audi A5 estate. Flizzr asks for 21 above the Compact class, and SIXT for 21 from the Intermediate class and on its Elite cars, and 25 for the BMW X6 and i7. Sicily By Car and Dollar keep the same minimum on every car in our search
  • Young driver fee: the conditions of Locauto, Enterprise, Flizzr, National, Dollar and SIXT on its regular offers say a young driver fee applies under 25, and they do not state the amount. The rental terms of Alamo, Sicily By Car and the SIXT Member deals say a young driver surcharge generally applies up to the age of 30, as a guide 5-35 EUR a day, paid at the desk. The offer prices from our search are for a driver aged 30-65. The conditions of Locauto, Enterprise, Flizzr, National, Dollar and SIXT on its regular offers state no maximum age
  • Licence held: at least 1 year at Flizzr, SIXT and Dollar, and 12 months in the rental terms of Alamo. Locauto asks for 1 year on the Toyota Aygo and 3 years on bigger cars, Enterprise and National for 3 years on every car, and the rental terms of Sicily By Car for 36 months. Flizzr asks for 2 years on the Peugeot 5008 and the Volkswagen Caravelle, and SIXT for 2 years on premium cars such as the BMW 5 Series and X3, and 3 years for the BMW X6 and i7
  • EU or UK licence: Your Europe says a licence issued in an EU country can be used anywhere in the EU, so with an EU licence you need no International Driving Permit (IDP) in Italy. With a UK photocard licence, gov.uk says you need no IDP in Italy, but Locauto asks for one from anyone not resident in the EU, and SIXT, on its regular offers, from residents of the UK, so if you live in the UK, bring an IDP for these two. Dollar asks drivers with a UK licence for a DVLA check code
  • Licence from outside the EU and the UK: Italian law (Codice della Strada, Art. 135) asks visitors with a licence from outside the EU and EEA for an IDP or an official Italian translation, so bring an IDP. Locauto asks for an IDP from non-EU residents, Enterprise and National from anyone who lives outside the UK and the EU, and Dollar with any licence not issued in the UK or the EU. SIXT, on its regular offers, asks for one with a licence printed in a non-Roman alphabet, such as Arabic, Japanese or Cyrillic, and from residents of Brazil and the UK

Florence or Pisa: which airport should you rent a car at?

Florence and Pisa are the two airports of Tuscany, about 79 km and 59 minutes apart by car on the toll-free FI-PI-LI road. Florence is the closer airport for Florence itself, Chianti and Siena. Pisa has more companies on our list and lower prices, and most of its desks are in one rent-a-car building next to car park P5.

Florence Airport and Pisa Airport compared, October 2026.

In our October 2026 data, the monthly averages at Pisa were lower than at Florence in every month. If your trip starts in Florence or goes mostly to Chianti and Siena, Florence Airport saves you about 30 minutes of driving each way to the centre of Florence. If price or a long list of companies matters more, look at Pisa. Our guide to car rental at Pisa Airport covers the companies there.

Florence Airport or the city centre: where to pick up the car?

The historic centre of Florence is a ZTL, a restricted traffic zone with cameras at the gates, and rental cars have no permit. The airport and the rent-a-car building are outside it, and from the airport you can head for the A11 or the A1 without entering the historic centre. For your days in Florence itself you do not need a car. The T2 “Vespucci” tram runs from the stop outside arrivals to Piazza dell’Unità, next to Santa Maria Novella station, in about 20-24 minutes. It runs about every 5 minutes from about 05:00 to 00:30, and a ticket costs 2.00 EUR for 90 minutes.

Autorentwiz tip: 50% of the Florence requests we get are for a pick-up in the city centre, not at the airport. Before you book a city office, check its address against the ZTL map, because the drive out of the centre can take you through a camera gate, and the fine reaches you later through the rental company. If you spend your first days in Florence, take the tram to the airport on the day you start driving. Send us your hotel address and dates on Messenger, and we will compare a city pick-up with the airport for you.

Driving from Florence Airport: the ZTL, parking and day trips

From the airport, the A11 motorway leads to Lucca and Pisa, and the A1 leads south to Chianti and north to Bologna. Both are toll motorways. The FI-PI-LI dual carriageway to Pisa and Livorno has no tolls. Lucca is about 70 km and 50 minutes away on the A11, and Bologna about 96 km and 1 hour 20 minutes on the A1.

Florence: the ZTL and hotel registration

Florence’s ZTL covers the historic centre, in sectors A, B and O. It is active from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 07:30 to 16:00, and it is free on Sundays and public holidays. From the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October, a night ZTL also runs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 23:00 to 03:00, in all sectors. Electronic gates read the plates automatically. A fine is usually about 83-333 EUR plus about 15 EUR in costs, and it is 30% lower if you pay within 5 days.

The rental company adds its own admin fee when it passes on your details. If your hotel is inside the ZTL, give it your plate number: the hotel can register the car up to about 2 hours after you enter, only to reach the hotel or its garage, and each new entry counts as a separate transit. Florence also has a low-emission zone, Scudo Verde, with cameras around the city, but it targets older polluting vehicles, so a Euro 6 or hybrid rental car is not affected.

Where to park for a day in Florence

The easiest option is the Villa Costanza park-and-ride, directly on the A1 between the Firenze Scandicci and Firenze Impruneta exits, which you can enter from both directions. It has 505 spaces, costs about 7 EUR for 24 hours, and the T1 tram takes you to the centre in under 30 minutes. Closer to the centre, the Fortezza-Fiera car park costs 2 EUR an hour, up to 20 EUR a day, and the Parterre car park 2 EUR an hour. The car park at Santa Maria Novella station costs 4 EUR an hour, and a full day there can pass 30 EUR. On the blue lines near the centre, visitors pay 2 EUR for the first hour and 3 EUR for each hour after, from Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 20:00.

Day trips: Chianti, San Gimignano and Siena

Greve in Chianti is about 40 km and 47 minutes away via the A1, or 51 minutes on the SP3 Chiantigiana through the vineyards. San Gimignano is about 63 km and 1 hour 5 minutes from the airport, and Siena about 81 km and 1 hour 15 minutes on the Raccordo Firenze-Siena dual carriageway.

From 15 November to 15 April, ANAS requires winter tyres or snow chains on board on state roads in Tuscany, including the Raccordo Firenze-Siena, and also outside those dates in snow or ice. Check before you go whether your route is covered, and ask for winter tyres when you book a winter rental.

What our customers say

It was our first time renting the car in Italy, Bergamo airport. Simas helped us to choose the car and answered all the questions we had. Was very easy to rent the car and was no issue with it. Thanks Simas. Would highly recommend and would rent again.

Dovile, Google review

Great response from the company, fast search and many options available for any budget, and for us, for the first time, the deposit was the lowest compared to other agents. Highly recommended!!!

Donatas, Google review

We rented a car online from another company. But when we got there, we ended up in a dispute with the rental company over the insurance terms. Autorentwiz replied to our messages late in the evening, went through the photos of the contract we sent and gladly gave us useful advice on how to handle the situation. Sincere thanks for the help.

FAQ: car rental at Florence Airport

Can I rent a car at Florence Airport with just a debit card?

Yes, with seven of the eight companies we recommend: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Flizzr (about 450 EUR), SIXT on its regular offers (from about 460 EUR), Alamo, Enterprise and National (500 EUR) and Dollar (700 EUR). Bring a physical card in the main driver’s name. Sicily By Car takes credit cards only.

Can I rent a car at Florence Airport without a credit card?

Yes. Locauto, Flizzr, SIXT, Alamo, Enterprise, National and Dollar accept a debit card instead. The main driver still needs a physical card from a traditional bank, because the deposit is blocked on it at pick-up. Our November search found no deals without a card at pick-up at Florence Airport.

Can I rent a car at Florence Airport with no deposit?

Yes, with Locauto. It asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up, and in our search all offers marked “no deposit” at Florence Airport were Locauto offers. Among companies that take a deposit, the lowest is Sicily By Car at 200 EUR on small cars, with a credit card. With a debit card, the lowest is about 450 EUR at Flizzr.

Should I rent a car at Florence Airport with full insurance?

It is usually worth it, because the excess at Florence was about 1,200-1,800 EUR on small cars in our search, and up to about 2,800 EUR on vans. Full coverage added to the online booking is the cheaper option, but the normal deposit stays and you claim any damage back from the insurer. The company’s cover at the desk costs more and removes the excess at once.

Where are the car rental desks at Florence Airport?

Most are not in the terminal. Locauto, Sicily By Car, Alamo, Enterprise, National, SIXT and Flizzr are in the rent-a-car building Palagio degli Spini, on Via Palagio degli Spini. A free shuttle runs there every 15-20 minutes from the stop in front of the arrivals exit, and the ride takes about 3 minutes. Dollar has its desk in the terminal, in the arrivals area.

Which car rental companies are at Florence Airport?

We found 33 companies with ratings at Florence Airport. We recommend 8, all rated 8.0 or higher with a staff score of 8.0 or higher: Locauto, Sicily By Car, Alamo, Enterprise, Flizzr, National, SIXT and Dollar.

Do car rental companies at Florence Airport accept Revolut?

No. The 8 companies we recommend at Florence list cards from online-only banks, such as Revolut, as not accepted, and our November search found no deals without a card at pick-up. You need a card from a traditional bank in the main driver’s name.

Which car rental at Florence Airport is open late in the evening?

Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, Flizzr, National and SIXT work every day until 23:00. Sicily By Car closes at 22:29 and Dollar at 21:30. None of our companies opens before 08:00.

What is the cheapest month to rent a car at Florence Airport?

January, at about 20 EUR a day on average across all offers. February and November are almost as cheap, at about 21-22 EUR. September is the most expensive month, at about 55 EUR a day.

Is it better to rent a car at Florence or Pisa?

For Florence, Chianti and Siena, Florence Airport is closer, and it saves about 30 minutes of driving each way to the centre of Florence. Pisa has more companies we recommend, 15 against 8, and in our October 2026 data it was cheaper in every month. At both airports most desks are in a rent-a-car building outside the terminal.

Can I drive a rental car into the centre of Florence?

Only outside the ZTL hours, or to reach a hotel inside the zone that registers your plate. The historic centre is closed to cars from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 07:30 to 16:00, and in summer also on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 23:00 to 03:00. Fines are usually about 83-333 EUR plus the rental company’s admin fee. Park outside the centre, for example at the Villa Costanza park-and-ride, and take the tram in.

Is it easy to get an automatic car at Florence Airport?

Yes. In our November search, 55% of all offers at Florence Airport were automatics, and 61% of the offers from our 8 companies. With a debit card, the cheapest automatic among our companies was a Volkswagen Polo at Alamo from 125 EUR a week.

What is the minimum age to rent a car at Florence Airport?

The minimum age is 18, at Flizzr and SIXT, on cars up to the Compact class. Locauto, Enterprise and National accept drivers from 19 on the Toyota Aygo only, and the rental terms of Alamo and Sicily By Car also start at 19. Dollar starts at 21 on every car. Most companies want an older driver for bigger cars, and all 8 state a young driver fee.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car at Florence Airport?

Not with an EU licence. With a UK photocard licence, gov.uk says you need no IDP in Italy, but Locauto asks for one from anyone not resident in the EU and SIXT, on its regular offers, from residents of the UK. With a licence from another country outside the EU, Italian law asks for an IDP or an official Italian translation, so bring an IDP.

Where is the best place to book a car at Florence Airport?

Through Autorentwiz: our search shows the same companies, cars and rental conditions as Discovercars, with our discount applied, so the same car costs less. At Florence Airport we recommend 8 companies. You can also get a free consultation by car rental experts on Messenger, and the discount is the same either way.

Is it better to rent a car at Florence Airport or in the city?

For most travellers, the airport is the easier choice: the airport and the rent-a-car building are outside the ZTL, and you can head for the A11 or the A1 without entering the historic centre. For days in Florence itself you do not need a car, because the T2 tram links the airport with Santa Maria Novella station in about 20-24 minutes, for 2.00 EUR. If you pick up in the city, check that the office and your route out avoid the ZTL gates.

What should I watch out for when renting a car at Florence Airport?

Seven of our eight companies are not in the terminal but in the rent-a-car building, so allow time for the free shuttle. Dollar closes at 21:30 and holds your car for only 29 minutes after the booked time. Sicily By Car takes credit cards only, and Enterprise and Dollar do not allow the car on a ferry. Florence’s ZTL also runs on summer nights from Thursday to Saturday, from 23:00 to 03:00.

How do you avoid extra charges when renting a car at Florence Airport?

At Florence Airport, check the deposit and the fuel rules in the offer conditions before you book. In most offers you return the car with the same amount of fuel as at pick-up, and the rental company charges much more for missing fuel than the pump price. Fill up at the Beyfin station on Viale Giovanni Luder, less than 1 km from the car return on Via Palagio degli Spini. If you already have full insurance, you do not need to buy the rental company’s insurance at the desk as well. Film the car from all sides at pick-up and at return.
