Car rental in Sicily: houses along the seashore from above

Car Rental in Sicily: Deposits, Debit Cards, One-Way Rentals and ZTL (2026)

Car rental in Sicily looks simple until you compare the three airports. Palermo, Catania and Trapani have different companies, different deposits and very different rules for debit cards: five of our recommended companies take a debit card at Palermo, three at Trapani and only one at Catania. This guide puts all three airports side by side, explains how to rent with no deposit at all, and answers the questions travellers ask us most: one-way fees, city-centre pick-ups, ZTL fines, tolls, ferries and when to book. For the full details of each airport, see our guides to car rental at Palermo Airport, car rental at Catania Airport and car rental at Trapani Airport. Every figure comes from our own consultations and was checked with the rental desks in September 2026.

Data last verified: September 2026.

The short version:

  • Debit cards: accepted by five companies at Palermo, three at Trapani and one at Catania (Locauto)
  • No deposit: Locauto at all three airports (only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation)
  • No deposit at all: Automania at Palermo, Catania and Trapani, with no card needed
  • One-way rentals: possible with Locauto, Sicily by Car, Automania and Italy Car Rent, with fees from 0 EUR to about 130 EUR
  • Fine admin fees: usually 25-100 EUR per fine, charged by the rental company
  • Tolls: the A18 and A20 motorways from Messina are tolled. The A19 Palermo-Catania and the A29 Palermo-Trapani are free
  • Ferries: most companies allow them. Automania, Dollar/Hertz, L’Automax and EuroRentcar do not
  • Booking: Sicily has no real low season. Book early with free cancellation and keep watching prices

Car rental in Sicily with a debit or credit card: deposits at every airport

Yes, you can rent a car in Sicily with a debit card, but only with some companies, and the choice depends on the airport. Palermo has the most options: five of our recommended companies accept debit cards there. Trapani has three, and at Catania only Locauto accepts one. Locauto takes no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation, and the others block 200 EUR to about 1200 EUR. For many travellers this is the key question: 69% of the people we advise on Sicily have only a debit card. For Sardinia, see our Alghero, Olbia and Cagliari airport guides; for the rest of Italy, our car rental in Italy guide.

Which companies accept a debit card in Sicily?

  • Palermo: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Maggiore (200 EUR), Alamo (500 EUR), Dollar/Hertz (700 EUR) and Masi Car Noleggio (about 1200 EUR). Details in our Palermo debit card list
  • Trapani: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Maggiore (200-500 EUR) and Alamo (500 EUR). Details in renting with a debit card at Trapani
  • Catania: only Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation). Details in renting at Catania with only a debit card
  • No card at all: Automania no-deposit offers at all three airports need no card

Catania is the hardest airport without a credit card, yet 55% of the Sicily requests we receive start there. If you land at Catania with only a debit card, book early: with so few debit-friendly options, the best-priced cars go first in high season.

Same company, different desk

A brand name does not guarantee the same service at every airport. Sicily by Car has the same terms at all three airports: a 200 EUR deposit and a credit card only. Its reviews are not the same: in September 2026 they were at the edge of our standards in Palermo, while the Trapani desk has great reviews. This is why we check every company at every airport, not only the brand.

Revolut and other neobank cards in Sicily

Masi Car Noleggio at Palermo officially accepts Revolut cards. At Trapani, none of our recommended companies does. Many desks refuse neobank cards even when they are debit cards, so check before you book. Our guide to car rental in Italy with a debit card explains which cards are accepted and which are refused.

How the deposit block works

The deposit is blocked on your card, not charged. You cannot spend that amount during the rental, and it is usually released within a week, at the latest within 30 days. With a 1200 EUR deposit and a normal account balance, this can freeze a large part of the holiday budget. That is why the card question comes first in every consultation we do.

Only have a debit card? Message us your dates and airport. We find a desk that accepts your card, apply our discount, and stay one message away if anything goes wrong at the desk.

“Excellent service, we rented a car via them in Sicily and the service and communication was flawless. Thanks a lot, will definitely continue using your services.”

Can you rent a car in Sicily with no deposit?

Yes, in two ways, and both work at all three airports. Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation that checks the card at pick-up. Automania offers genuine no-deposit rentals at Palermo, Catania and Trapani with no card needed at all, and it is also the company we recommend most for late-night arrivals. These are public offers, not something only we can get.

Want a car with no deposit in Sicily? Message us your dates and airport. We find current Automania no-deposit offers, apply our discount and explain what to check at pick-up.

Do you need full insurance for a rental car in Sicily?

We recommend it. The basic cover included in the price (CDW) limits what you pay if the car is damaged, but a large excess remains, and the deposit on your card secures that excess. Full insurance bought when you book refunds what the rental company charges for damage. With it, you do not need the extra insurance offered at the desk, which would cover the same risk a second time. None of the companies we recommend in Sicily forces you to buy its own insurance because you pay with a debit card. The exceptions are ferries or cross-border trips, where some companies require their own cover, such as Goldcar for ferries from Catania. Before you drive off, photograph and film the car from all sides and check that every scratch is marked on the contract.

Autorentwiz tip: not sure what your insurance covers? Message us before booking: we explain the terms of your offer and help you if a damage dispute comes up after the rental.

One-way car rental in Sicily: can you return the car somewhere else?

Yes. Locauto, Sicily by Car, Automania and Italy Car Rent allow one-way rentals between Sicilian airports and cities. The one-way fee ranges from 0 EUR to about 130 EUR, depending on the company, the route and the dates. A one-way rental lets you cross the island once, for example landing in Palermo and flying home from Catania, without driving back. Trapani is a small airport, so one-way options there are more limited. Our Palermo guide covers the Palermo to Catania one-way route in more detail.

Autorentwiz tip: the same one-way route can cost 0 EUR with one company and over 100 EUR with another, and the fee changes with the dates. Send us your route, and we book the best option with our discount.

City-centre pick-up or airport pick-up?

You can usually pick up and return the car in a city centre instead of at the airport. This makes sense if you spend your first days in Palermo or Catania without a car, or if you want to skip city driving at the end of the trip. Picking up in one place and returning in another can add a one-way fee, so compare it with the cost of a bus to the airport desk. Airport buses in Sicily are cheap and frequent (fares as of 2026):

  • Palermo: the Prestia e Comandè bus to the city centre runs every 30 minutes and costs about 6 EUR one way. The Trinacria Express train costs about 5,90 EUR
  • Catania: the Alibus costs 4 EUR and reaches the central station in about 15 minutes
  • Trapani: the AST bus to Trapani costs about 4,90 EUR and takes about 20 minutes

Autorentwiz tip: Locauto sometimes charges 0 EUR for one-way rentals, and a city-centre pick-up with an airport drop-off can even cost less than a same-place rental. Book it through us to get our extra discount, and you have our support if anything goes wrong at the city office.

“We were very satisfied, so we want to recommend it to others. We received several car rental offers in Italy, so there was plenty to choose from. We also received useful advice on what to look for when choosing and renting a car, so we felt more at ease. All questions were answered quickly and clearly. It was a pleasant surprise that they also asked after the rental if everything went smoothly. Thank you!”

ZTL zones, fines and admin fees in Sicily

Most Sicilian towns, including Palermo, Catania, Taormina, Syracuse and Noto, close their historic centres to traffic with ZTL zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato). There is no barrier: a camera records the number plate, and rental cars get no exemption. The fine goes to the rental company first, which gives your details to the police and charges you an admin fee, usually 25-100 EUR per fine. This is normal practice for rental companies everywhere. The fine itself arrives later, often months after the trip. Palermo’s zone has its own hours, covered in our guide to the Palermo ZTL.

Two things save money. First, if you pay a fine within 5 days of receiving the notice, Italian law gives a 30% discount on most fines. Second, admin fees have limits. In a case reported by the European Consumer Centre in Italy, a court in Bolzano ruled a rental company’s fine administration fees unjustified and excessive, and the Italian competition authority (AGCM) ordered Sicily by Car to inform customers about their right to reimbursement. If a fee looks far above the usual range, ask the company to explain it. The European Consumer Centre also explains how charges after a car rental work.

What is driving in Sicily really like?

Driving in Sicily is manageable once you know what to expect. Locals drive assertively, signal rarely and fill any gap quickly, especially in Palermo and Catania. Outside the two big cities, traffic is calm. A few rules make the trip easier:

  • Tolls: the A18 (Messina-Catania) and A20 (Messina-Palermo) motorways have tolls. The A19 between Palermo and Catania and the A29 between Palermo and Trapani are free
  • Car size: choose the smallest car that fits your group and luggage. Old-town streets are narrow and parking spaces are tight
  • Parking: park at the edge of old towns. Blue lines mean paid parking, white lines are usually free, and yellow lines are for residents or permit holders
  • Rental length: 1-2 day rentals in Sicily are expensive, and 2 days often cost about the same as 5. If you need a car for part of the trip, also check the price for the whole trip. Most of our Sicily customers rent for about a week: the median rental is 7 days

Can you take a rental car on a ferry from Sicily?

Yes, with most companies, but check before you book: taking a car on a ferry without permission voids the insurance. Rules for the companies we recommend in Sicily:

  • Ferries free: Locauto, Sicily by Car, Maggiore, Alamo, WayCar and Italy Car Rent
  • Ferries for a fee: GaldieriRent (48,80 EUR) and Masi Car Noleggio (20 EUR)
  • Only with the company’s own coverage: Goldcar
  • No ferries: Automania, Dollar/Hertz, L’Automax and EuroRentcar

The Messina Strait crossing to mainland Italy is short and runs often. On the mainland side, Lamezia Terme Airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes from the port of Villa San Giovanni, and our Lamezia Terme Airport guide lists which companies there allow the ferry. For the Aeolian and Egadi islands, it is usually better to leave the car at the port and cross on foot. Many fast boats carry passengers only, and several islands limit visitors’ cars in summer. Our Trapani guide covers the Egadi ferries from Trapani.

When to book a rental car in Sicily

Sicily is one of the most expensive regions in Italy to rent a car, and we have never seen a real low season there. The question is not whether prices go up, but when they start rising. Our advice: book early with free cancellation, then keep watching the market. If prices drop, cancel and book again. More ways to cut the price are in our guide on how to save money on car rental, and you can always message us for a car rental in Sicily with our discount.

Do you need a car in Sicily?

For most trips, yes. Many of Sicily’s best places, from the Valley of the Temples and Etna to beaches, hill towns and nature reserves, are hard or slow to reach by public transport, and a car lets you see several of them in one day. You may not need a car if you stay only in Palermo or Catania: both cities are best explored on foot, parking is hard, and the historic centres are ZTL zones. In that case, rent a car only for the days you leave the city, and compare the price with a longer rental, because short rentals in Sicily are expensive.

FAQ: car rental in Sicily

Can I rent a car in Sicily with a debit card?

Yes, but it depends on the airport. Palermo has the most options: five of our recommended companies accept debit cards there (Locauto, Maggiore, Alamo, Dollar/Hertz and Masi Car Noleggio). Trapani has three: Locauto, Maggiore and Alamo. At Catania, only Locauto accepts a debit card. Automania no-deposit offers need no card at all.

How much is the deposit for a rental car in Sicily?

Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation at pick-up. At the other companies the deposit goes up to about 1200 EUR with Goldcar or Masi Car Noleggio. Sicily by Car blocks 200 EUR at all three airports, and most other companies block 500-900 EUR. The deposit is blocked on the card, not charged, and is usually released within a week.

Can I rent a car in Sicily without a deposit?

Yes. Automania offers genuine no-deposit rentals at Palermo, Catania and Trapani with no card needed. Locauto asks for no deposit at all three airports, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation at pick-up. We can find current no-deposit offers for your dates with our discount.

Can I pick up a car in Palermo and return it in Catania?

Yes. Locauto, Sicily by Car, Automania and Italy Car Rent allow one-way rentals in Sicily. The one-way fee ranges from 0 EUR to about 130 EUR, depending on the company, route and dates. Message us before booking to find the best option for your route.

Is it cheaper to rent a car in the city centre or at the airport in Sicily?

It depends on the dates. A city pick-up can add a one-way fee, while airport buses cost only 4-6 EUR. Sometimes a Locauto city-centre pick-up with an airport drop-off is even cheaper than a same-place rental, so it is worth comparing both options before booking.

What happens if I get a ZTL fine in a rental car in Sicily?

The rental company receives the fine, passes your details to the police and charges an admin fee, usually 25-100 EUR. The fine itself reaches you later, often months after the trip. If you pay within 5 days of receiving it, most fines are reduced by 30%.

Are there tolls on motorways in Sicily?

Only on some. The A18 Messina-Catania and A20 Messina-Palermo motorways have tolls. The A19 Palermo-Catania and A29 Palermo-Trapani motorways are free.

Can I take a rental car on a ferry from Sicily?

With most companies, yes. Locauto, Sicily by Car, Maggiore, Alamo, WayCar and Italy Car Rent allow ferries for free, GaldieriRent and Masi Car Noleggio for a fee, and Goldcar only with its own coverage. Automania, Dollar/Hertz, L’Automax and EuroRentcar do not allow ferries.

When should I book a rental car for Sicily?

As early as possible, with free cancellation. Sicily has no real low season, and prices only rise closer to the dates. Keep watching the market after booking: if prices drop, cancel and book again.

Do I need a car in Sicily?

For most trips, yes: many of the best places are hard to reach by public transport. If you stay only in Palermo or Catania, you can skip the car for the city days and rent one only when you leave the city.

Do I need full insurance for a rental car in Sicily?

We recommend full insurance bought when you book: it refunds what the rental company charges for damage, so you do not need the extra insurance offered at the desk. None of the companies we recommend in Sicily forces you to buy its own insurance because you pay with a debit card.

Can I rent a car in Sicily without a credit card?

Yes. A debit card works at Palermo (five of our recommended companies accept one), Trapani (three) or Catania (Locauto only). Locauto takes no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation at pick-up. You can also choose an Automania no-deposit offer, which needs no card at all at all three airports.

Should I rent a car in Sicily with full insurance?

Usually yes. Basic cover is included, but you still pay the excess if the car is damaged or stolen. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheapest way to cover it: it works by refund, and the deposit is still blocked. The rental company’s own insurance at the desk removes the excess directly but costs the most. None of our recommended companies here makes you buy its own insurance just because you pay with a debit card.

Through Autorentwiz: our search shows the same companies, cars and rental conditions as Discovercars, with our discount applied, so the same car costs less. Rental cars are not exempt from the ZTL zones, and the rental company adds an admin fee of usually 25-100 EUR per fine. Automania, Dollar/Hertz, L’Automax and EuroRentcar do not allow the car on a ferry. Short rentals are expensive, and 2 days often cost about the same as 5.
