Car rental at Cagliari Airport (CAG) is where most southern Sardinia trips begin. The airport itself, officially Cagliari Elmas “Mario Mameli”, is the main gateway to the south and the busiest on the island. It is also one of the three airports our customers ask about most, alongside Alghero and Olbia. The south of the island rewards a car more than almost anywhere else in Italy: Villasimius, Chia and the Costa del Sud are all within an hour of the runway and none of them are practical by bus. This guide covers where the rental desks are, which companies we recommend and why, what each one blocks on your card, and one Cagliari-specific trap that catches people who land late at night. As everywhere in Sardinia, the two classic mistakes are arriving with the wrong card for the deposit and booking a car that is not allowed on a ferry. Both are covered below.
Short on time? Here is the summary:
- Lowest deposit: Locauto, from 0,01 EUR
- Debit card accepted: every recommended company except Sicily by Car
- Credit card only: Sicily by Car
- Revolut accepted: only at Keddy / Europcar, a rare exception in Sardinia
- Taking a ferry off the island: allowed by Locauto, Sicily by Car, and Alamo / National / Enterprise
- Landing late at night: no desk here runs around the clock, Sicily by Car stays open longest, until 00:30
- Flying into northern Sardinia instead? See our guides to car rental at Olbia Airport and car rental at Alghero Airport
- Travelling in June or July: book early, Sardinia sells out weeks in advance

Car rental company locations at Cagliari Airport (CAG)
Cagliari Elmas is the biggest airport in Sardinia, but the rental pick-up is still refreshingly simple. There is one terminal, and the companies we recommend are either inside it or in the complex of parking and rental buildings directly in front of it. There is no long shuttle ride involved with any of them. The airport operator publishes terminal maps and transport information on the official Cagliari Airport website if you want to check anything before you fly.
Car rental desks inside the terminal
The Budget, Maggiore and Avis group has its desks inside the terminal building. Collect your luggage, walk through to the arrivals hall, and the counters are right there. If keeping everything indoors matters to you, or you are landing with small children and a mountain of bags, this is the most convenient pick-up at Cagliari.
Whichever company you booked with, the counter process is the same and it is where most disputes start. Our guide to a flawless car rental pick-up covers what to check before you sign anything and drive away.
The rental complex in front of the terminal
Keddy / Europcar operates from the complex of parking and rental buildings just outside the terminal, directly in front of it. On booking sites this can show up with labels that make it sound far away. It is not. You walk out of arrivals and the complex is in front of you. The rental fleets themselves wait in the same parking complex, in marked lanes per company, like this:

Autorentwiz tip: The same rule applies at Cagliari as everywhere in Italy. Booking sites use identical labels for a desk you can see from the terminal door and for a depot twenty minutes away. Check the actual pick-up address before you dismiss an offer, because the label tells you nothing about the walk.
Car rental at Cagliari Airport: the companies we recommend
Dozens of suppliers operate at Cagliari Elmas. We do not list all of them, because most of them are not worth your money. Our team goes through the terms and conditions of each company, checks their deposit rules, card requirements and ferry policies, and then recommends the ones we would book ourselves. These six are the ones that pass at Cagliari.
| Company | Deposit | Card accepted | Ferry allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locauto | 0,01 EUR | Debit or credit | Yes, no fee |
| Budget / Avis | 200 EUR | Debit or credit | No |
| Sicily by Car | 200 EUR | Credit card only | Yes, no fee |
| Alamo / National / Enterprise | 500 EUR | Debit or credit | Yes, no fee |
| Maggiore | 200-700 EUR | Debit or credit | No |
| Keddy / Europcar | 800 EUR | Debit, credit or Revolut | No |

A quick word on each. Locauto belongs to the Alamo, National and Enterprise family and is our pick for the premium experience at the best price, with a deposit of effectively nothing. Its sister brands Alamo, National and Enterprise offer the same premium fleet with a 500 EUR deposit, so within that family, Locauto is usually the one to choose. Budget and Avis are the solid middle option with a low 200 EUR deposit and desks inside the terminal, while Maggiore from the same group runs a wider deposit range of 200 to 700 EUR depending on the car.
Sicily by Car earns consistently good feedback from our customers and combines a low deposit with ferry permission, but you will need a credit card. Keddy / Europcar asks for the biggest deposit on the list, and in exchange offers something almost nobody else in Sardinia does, which we cover next.
If you only have a debit card
This is the single most common problem we deal with. Around six in ten of the travellers we consult have a debit card and no credit card at all, and the rental industry still quietly assumes everyone carries credit. At Cagliari the situation is genuinely good: every company we recommend here accepts debit cards except one.
Locauto is the first recommendation, with a 0,01 EUR deposit that leaves your balance untouched. Budget and Avis take debit with a manageable 200 EUR block, Maggiore with a deposit between 200 and 700 EUR depending on the car, and Alamo, National and Enterprise with 500 EUR. Keddy / Europcar also accepts debit, but blocks 800 EUR, so check your available balance before you travel. The only credit-card-only company on our Cagliari list is Sicily by Car.
The rules are similar across the rest of the country, and we have written them up in detail in our guide to renting a car in Italy with a debit card.
Paying the deposit with Revolut at Cagliari Airport
Here is the Cagliari exception worth knowing about. As a rule, digital bank cards like Revolut, Wise and Monese are refused at rental desks in Sardinia, regardless of whether they carry a Visa or Mastercard logo. At Cagliari Airport, Keddy / Europcar accepts Revolut for the deposit. As far as we know from our day-to-day work, that makes them the rare exception rather than the rule.
Two practical notes before you rely on it. The deposit at Keddy / Europcar is 800 EUR, so the money needs to actually be in your Revolut account, and a blocked 800 EUR on the card you also use for daily spending can pinch. If Revolut is your only card, this is your option at Cagliari. If you also have a normal debit card, Locauto with its 0,01 EUR deposit is usually the more comfortable route.
If you have a credit card
A credit card opens up the whole list, including Sicily by Car, which is the one company here that will not take debit. They pair a low 200 EUR deposit with free ferry permission and consistently good customer feedback, and their desk stays open later than anyone else at this airport, until 00:30. If your flight lands in the late evening, that last point can decide the whole booking, as we explain below.
Not sure which one fits your dates and your card? Send us a message and we will check the live prices and conditions for your exact trip. It is free, there is no obligation, and it takes us a few minutes.
Deposits at Cagliari Airport, and why they vary so much
Look at the table again and notice the range. At the same airport, in the same week, one company blocks one cent and another blocks 800 EUR. That is not a small difference in the fine print. It decides whether your holiday budget is intact when you drive out of the car park.
What a deposit actually does to your card
The deposit is money frozen on your card for the whole rental. You do not lose it, but you cannot spend it either. If you are travelling on a debit card with a normal current account balance, an 800 EUR block can leave you short for hotels, restaurants and fuel for the rest of the trip. This is why we ask every customer what kind of card they have before we send any offers.
Landing late at Cagliari: desk opening hours
This is the Cagliari-specific trap. None of the rental desks at this airport operate around the clock. Sicily by Car holds out the longest, staying open until 00:30. Everyone else closes earlier in the evening. Rental companies typically give you one to two hours of tolerance after your booked pick-up time, and after that your reservation can simply be released. If your flight is delayed into the small hours, you can land to closed counters and no car, and the money you saved on the cheap late flight disappears into a taxi and a scramble the next morning.
Autorentwiz tip: check the desk hours against your realistic arrival time, not your scheduled one.
Evening flights to Sardinia are often the cheapest, and they are also the ones that slip. Before you book a flight that lands close to midnight, check when your rental desk actually closes and what happens if you are late. Sometimes the cheaper flight makes the whole trip more expensive. If you are landing very late, it can be smarter to stay the night near the airport and collect the car fresh in the morning, and it is usually cheaper too, because you are not paying for a rental day you spend asleep.
Do you need the insurance they sell at the desk?
Short answer: not if you already bought full coverage when you booked. The logic is simple once someone explains it. If your booking includes full coverage, then whatever the rental company charges you for damage, from a scratched bumper to a chipped windscreen, gets refunded back to you by the coverage. The protection the agent is selling at the counter insures the same risk a second time. You would be paying twice for one umbrella.
The agents at the desk can be very convincing, and it is worth understanding why: selling that policy is part of how they earn. It is a normal part of the job, not a scam, but it does mean the recommendation you hear at the counter is not neutral advice. Decide about coverage calmly when you book, not standing at a desk with your family waiting and a queue behind you.
Driving from Cagliari Airport: distances and the ZTL
The airport sits at Elmas, just northwest of the city, with quick access to the SS130 and the roads east and west along the coast. There are no toll roads anywhere in Sardinia, so none of these drives cost anything beyond fuel. These are the trips most of our customers make:
- Cagliari city centre: about 7 km, roughly 15 minutes
- Pula and the Nora ruins: about 45 km, roughly 45 minutes
- Chia and its beaches: about 55 km, roughly an hour
- Villasimius: about 60 km, roughly an hour, longer in summer traffic along the coast
The Cagliari ZTL and how the fines reach you

Autorentwiz tip: do not drive into the historic centre of Cagliari.
Parts of the old city are a Zona a Traffico Limitato, a limited traffic zone enforced by cameras. There is no barrier and nobody stops you at the time. A camera reads your number plate and the fine arrives months later through your rental company, who add an administration fee of their own on top.
Park outside the restricted area and explore the old town on foot. It is compact, and the climb up to Castello is part of the experience. If your hotel is inside a restricted zone, ask them to register your number plate before you arrive.
The European Commission keeps a record of Italian traffic restrictions in its Urban Access Regulations database if you want to check the current rules yourself.
Taking your rental car on the ferry from Sardinia
Sardinia is an island, and plenty of travellers plan to take the ferry to the mainland or on to Corsica. This is where rental agreements catch people out, because most companies simply do not allow their cars to leave the island.
Which companies allow ferry travel
Of the companies we recommend at Cagliari, only Locauto and Sicily by Car permit ferry travel, and neither charges an extra fee for it. Keddy / Europcar and the Budget, Maggiore and Avis group do not allow it at all.
Autorentwiz tip: If a ferry is anywhere in your plans, decide that before you book, not after. Taking a car onto a ferry against the rental agreement voids your insurance completely. If anything happens to the vehicle, from a scratch to a theft, you are personally liable for all of it.
Young drivers and one-way rentals from Cagliari
Two questions we get about Cagliari every week. First, the minimum age: most companies here set it between 21 and 23, often with a young driver fee on top, and the exact rules differ between suppliers and car categories. If you are under 25, message us before you book anything and we will find the offer that actually works for your age, because the differences between companies are bigger than people expect.
Second, one-way rentals: picking up at Cagliari and dropping off at Olbia or Alghero is possible, and it is a great way to see the whole island without driving back. Expect an extra one-way fee with most companies, and make sure the drop-off location is written into the booking from the start rather than negotiated at the desk.
When to book a rental car in Sardinia
Sardinia is not like mainland Italy when it comes to availability. The island has a limited number of cars, demand is heavily concentrated into a short summer season, and once the fleet is gone it is gone. Prices do not just rise, the cars genuinely run out.
Autorentwiz tip: Sardinia is prone to sell-outs. In June and July, cars can be completely sold out two to three weeks before your travel dates. If you are flying in during the summer, organise the car as soon as your flights are booked. Leaving it until the last week is how people end up paying triple, or driving away in something far bigger than they wanted.
Most rental bookings can be cancelled free of charge, so booking early costs you nothing and protects you against exactly this. If the price drops later, you can rebook. We go through that trick and several others in our guide to saving money on car rental.

FAQ car rental at Cagliari Airport
Yes. Locauto, Budget, Avis, Maggiore, Alamo, National, Enterprise and Keddy / Europcar all accept debit cards at Cagliari Airport. Locauto is the easiest option because the deposit starts at 0,01 EUR. Sicily by Car is the only company on our Cagliari list that requires a credit card in the name of the main driver.
At Keddy / Europcar, yes. They accept Revolut for the 800 EUR deposit, which makes them a rare exception, since digital bank cards are normally refused at rental desks in Sardinia. Make sure the full deposit amount is available in your account before you travel.
It depends on the company. Locauto blocks as little as 0,01 EUR. Budget, Avis and Sicily by Car take 200 EUR, Alamo, National and Enterprise 500 EUR, and Maggiore between 200 and 700 EUR. Keddy / Europcar blocks 800 EUR. The exact amount also depends on the car category and your rental dates.
Only with Locauto or Sicily by Car, and neither charges a fee for it. Keddy / Europcar and the Budget, Maggiore and Avis group do not permit ferry travel. Taking a car on a ferry without permission voids your insurance entirely, so confirm this before booking rather than at the port.
No desk at Cagliari Airport operates around the clock. Sicily by Car stays open longest, until 00:30. Companies typically hold a booking for one to two hours after the agreed pick-up time, and after that the reservation can be released. If your flight lands late in the evening, check the desk closing time against a realistic arrival, and consider collecting the car the next morning instead.
Not if you bought full coverage during the booking process. Full coverage already refunds whatever the rental company charges you for damage, so the desk policy would insure the same risk twice. Desk agents can be very convincing, partly because selling that policy is how they earn, so make the coverage decision when you book, not at the counter.
Usually between 21 and 23, depending on the company, and often with a young driver fee on top. The rules differ between suppliers and car categories, so if you are under 25 it pays to compare carefully. Message us and we will find the offer that works best for your age.

Not with a true no-deposit deal on our Cagliari list. The closest option is Locauto, which blocks as little as 0,01 EUR on a debit card. The other companies block 200 to 800 EUR.
Usually yes. Basic cover is included, but you still pay the excess if the car is damaged or stolen. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheapest way to cover it: it works by refund, and the deposit is still blocked. The rental company’s own insurance at the desk removes the excess directly but costs the most.
