Verona Airport (VRN), also called Valerio Catullo or Villafranca, is about 10 km south-west of the centre of Verona, and the SS12 and SS62 roads link the two. For one week in November we found 818 rental offers from 27 companies here, and 56% of them were automatics. Thirteen of the 16 companies we recommend have their office at the airport, a short covered walk from arrivals, and three pick you up by shuttle. Ten of the 16 accept a debit card, including Locauto, which asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation at pick-up. This guide to car rental at Verona Airport covers each of the 16 companies we recommend, debit and Revolut cards, deposits, full insurance, prices by month, how Verona compares with two other airports nearby, and what to know before you drive into Verona, to Lake Garda or up the A22 to the Dolomites.
Data last verified: October 2026. Written by Simas Krasaitis, founder of Autorentwiz and former head of car rental at ADCRent.

Car rental at Verona Airport: the 16 companies we recommend
Verona has a long list of rental companies: 29 are rated by verified renters at this airport, and 27 had offers in our November search. To make our list, a company needs a rating of 8.0 or higher from verified renters at this airport and a separate score of 8.0 or higher for its staff here. Seventeen companies passed both, and 16 of them had offers in our search. Moventur, rated 8.5, had none. ECH, Autovia and Europcar missed the staff score, and Thrifty, Avis, Budget, Noleggiare, Sinergia, Drivalia and Italy Car Rent are rated below 8.0 at Verona. Viaggiare had offers too, rated 7.4.
Enterprise and National passed with only 2 ratings each, Dollar with 4 and Hertz with 8, and the page shows no rating count for Flizzr and U-Save, so their scores say less than the others. Our car rental in Italy page compares Verona with the other Italian airports.

Car rental deposits at Verona Airport by company

At Verona, Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up. Maggiore blocks 200 EUR on every offer we checked, on a debit or a credit card, and Sicily By Car 200 EUR on small cars, on a credit card only. Flizzr blocks about 439-450 EUR and SIXT about 447-466 EUR, and Alamo, Enterprise and National 500 EUR, all on a debit or a credit card.
Felirent, Hertz and Dollar block 700 EUR, and Dollar also asks for a separate fuel deposit when you collect the car. Optimo Rent and Ecovia block 750 EUR and Keddy 800 EUR. The highest deposits are at the shuttle companies Target Rent (850 EUR) and U-Save (900 EUR), and at Sicily By Car on its 9-seat Mercedes Vito (1,000 EUR). A low deposit does not mean a low excess: Maggiore blocks only 200 EUR, but its excess runs from 1,952 EUR on a Fiat 500 to 4,758 EUR on a Peugeot 5008.
Where are the car rental desks at Verona Airport?
Verona Airport has two terminals, arrivals and departures, right next to each other. According to the Verona Airport car rental page, the rental offices are on the ground floor outside the Arrivals Terminal, and you must go to the office even if you booked online. Leave the airport, turn left and follow the covered walkway towards the car park: after about 50 m, the Rent a Car signs are on your right. To return the car from the ring road, take the second airport entrance on the left and follow the Rent a Car signs.
Maggiore and Optimo Rent give their desk in the Arrivals terminal, and Optimo Rent shares it with Autovia. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and National are in the car rental building about 100 m from the terminal, on the left: follow the “Autonoleggi” or “Car Rental” signs. SIXT and Flizzr, a SIXT branch, are in the Car Rental Center, about 100 m from arrivals. Sicily By Car is in a separate rent-a-car area about 200 m from arrivals, with its sign on the roof. Hertz and Dollar ask you to follow the signs to the car rental area, where Ecovia also has its office, and Keddy lists its desk at the airport. The three shuttle companies work like this:
- Target Rent has its office on Via dell’Artigianato 96a in Sommacampagna, about 2.2 km away, and picks you up with the ParkinGO shuttle. Leave Arrivals, follow the red pedestrian path in front of the taxi lane and wait at the small roundabout for the 9-seat ParkinGO shuttle. Bring inbound and outbound flight tickets in the renter’s name: Target Rent says renters without them will be denied service
- Felirent is on Via Aeroporto 20, about 0.7 km away. Call Felirent when you land and wait at the meeting point at the Arrivals exit for the shuttle with the Felirent logo
- U-Save is on Via dell’Artigianato 19/b in Villafranca di Verona, about 0.8 km away. Leave the terminal, turn left, walk about 100 m along the pavement to the car rental building and call U-Save for its white shuttle. At airport locations it asks for inbound and outbound flight or train tickets in the renter’s name for the rental dates
Autorentwiz tip: this tip comes from all our customers, not only those who fly to Verona. About 6 in 10 of the customers who name their card have only a debit card, and about 73% have a debit card. At Verona Airport 10 of our 16 companies accept a debit card, and all ten are at the airport. With a debit card, Locauto takes no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation, and Maggiore blocks 200 EUR. The three shuttle companies, Target Rent, Felirent and U-Save, have many of the cheapest offers, and all three take credit cards only. Check the card section of the rental conditions before you book, or send us your dates on Messenger and we will check it for you.
Late arrivals and opening hours
At Verona the desks keep the same hours every day of the week, except U-Save, and none of our companies opens before 08:00. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, SIXT, Flizzr and Keddy work until 23:00, Sicily By Car until 22:59 and Maggiore until 22:30. Felirent closes at 22:00, and Ecovia‘s offers also give 22:00. Optimo Rent closes at 21:30, and Hertz and Dollar at 20:00.
Target Rent closes at 19:00, and U-Save at 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 13:00 on Sundays, so both suit only daytime flights. Optimo Rent and Sicily By Car hold your car for 2 hours after the booked time, Dollar and Keddy for only 29 minutes, and most others for about an hour. Add your flight number to the booking.
Returning the car: the nearest petrol station
The nearest petrol station is the Q8 (Dalla Bernardina) on Via Aeroporto, the airport road, about 0.8 km north of the rental area. We found different opening hours for it in two sources, so check them on Google Maps before a late return. The Tamoil on Via dell’Artigianato 100 in Sommacampagna, next to the Target Rent office and about 2 km west of the terminal, was listed on Google Maps as open 24 hours when we checked in October 2026. Fill up before you return, because most rental conditions ask for the same fuel level you started with, and the refuelling charge at the desk is much higher than the pump price.

Can I rent a car at Verona Airport with a debit card?
Yes, with 10 of the 16 companies we recommend, and all ten are at the airport: Locauto (no deposit, only a 0,01 EUR card authorisation), Maggiore (200 EUR), Flizzr (about 439-450 EUR), SIXT (about 447-466 EUR), Alamo, Enterprise and National (500 EUR), Hertz and Dollar (700 EUR) and Keddy (800 EUR). The other six, Target Rent, Optimo Rent, Felirent, Sicily By Car, Ecovia and U-Save, take credit cards only. Some bigger cars need a credit card even at the debit card companies: premium cars such as the Mercedes C-Class and Alfa Romeo Stelvio at Maggiore, the Ford Kuga at Dollar, and the Ford Kuga and Audi Q3 at Hertz.
At the desk you need a physical debit card in the main driver’s name. Maggiore, Locauto, Alamo, Dollar, Flizzr and Hertz do not take Maestro, and Maggiore and Dollar also refuse Visa Electron. SIXT, Flizzr and Hertz want a card with chip and PIN. In our search the cheapest car with a debit card was a Toyota Aygo at Locauto, about 105 EUR a week, and the cheapest automatic a Volkswagen Polo at Alamo, about 122 EUR. Our guide to renting a car in Italy with a debit card explains what the desk checks.
Renting a car at Verona Airport with a Revolut card
None of the 16 companies we recommend at Verona accepts cards from online-only banks such as Revolut: all of them list these cards as not accepted in the offers we checked. The conditions of Keddy name “Revolut Credit” among the accepted credit cards, but the same conditions list cards from online-only banks as not accepted, so we would not count on it. Our November search also found no deals at Verona where no card is needed at pick-up. If Revolut is the only card you have, you need a card from a traditional bank in the main driver’s name to rent here.
Car rental at Verona Airport with no deposit
Among the companies we recommend, Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up, at its office in the car rental building, open until 23:00. In our search the cheapest Locauto car was a Toyota Aygo, about 105 EUR for the week. Among companies that take a deposit, the lowest are Maggiore, at 200 EUR on a debit or a credit card, and Sicily By Car, at 200 EUR on small cars with a credit card only. With a debit card, the next lowest are Flizzr and SIXT, at about 439-466 EUR. Sinergia also had offers marked with a zero deposit, but it is rated 7.8 at Verona, below our bar. Our guide to saving money on car rental shows how to weigh the deposit against the price.
Desk insurance or full coverage at Verona Airport?
At Verona the excess, the part of any damage you pay yourself, was about 1,200-2,800 EUR at most of our companies in our search. Locauto and U-Save had the lowest, from 1,200 EUR, and Keddy 1,300 EUR. The highest were at Maggiore (up to 4,758 EUR on a Peugeot 5008) and Felirent (up to 4,200 EUR on an Opel Mokka). You can cover the excess in two ways.
Full coverage added online when you book costs less per day, but the desk still blocks the normal deposit, and if something happens you pay the company and claim the money back from the insurer. The company’s own cover, sold at the desk, costs more but removes the excess on the spot. If you already bought full coverage, you do not need the desk cover as well. Our pick-up tips show how to film the car and what to check at pick-up.
Driver age and driving licence rules
The rules below come from the rental conditions of the 16 companies we recommend, for small cars unless we say otherwise, and the conditions of your own offer are what counts at the desk. Most companies accept only a physical licence, not a digital one. Send us the driver’s age on Messenger, and we will check which offers allow it.
- Minimum age: 18 at SIXT and Flizzr. 19 at Target Rent, Felirent, Ecovia and U-Save, and on small cars at Maggiore, Locauto, Alamo and Sicily By Car. 21 at Optimo Rent, Enterprise, Dollar, National, Keddy and Hertz. Most companies want the licence held for at least 1 year, Optimo Rent for 2 years, and Alamo, Enterprise, National and Keddy for 3 years
- Bigger cars: the minimum is 21 for the Volkswagen T-Cross, Jeep Renegade and Peugeot 5008 at Maggiore, the Volkswagen Polo and Peugeot 308 at Locauto and Alamo, the Seat Arona at Sicily By Car and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer at SIXT. The 9-seat Volkswagen Caravelle needs 25 at Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and National, while the 9-seat Mercedes Vito at Sicily By Car stays at 19. On bigger cars, Maggiore wants the licence held for 2 years and Locauto for 3 years
- Young driver fee and maximum age: a young driver fee applies under 25 at most companies, under 23 at Sicily By Car and under 26 at Optimo Rent. The conditions do not state the amount. The maximum age is 74 at Optimo Rent, 80 at Felirent and U-Save and 82 at Sicily By Car, and Target Rent, Felirent, Ecovia and U-Save charge a senior fee over 75
- EU or EEA licence: Italian law requires no International Driving Permit (IDP). A licence issued in an EU country is valid anywhere in the EU (Your Europe), and none of our 16 companies asks for an IDP with an EU licence. Only Felirent‘s conditions name licences from Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, so with one of these, bring an IDP
- UK licence: with a photocard licence you need no IDP to drive in Italy (GOV.UK), but Locauto, Sicily By Car, Target Rent, Optimo Rent and SIXT still ask for one with a UK licence or from drivers who live in the UK. With a UK licence, Dollar asks you to bring your DVLA check code
- Other licences from outside the EU: Italian law requires an IDP or an official Italian translation with the licence (Art. 135 of the Highway Code), so bring an IDP. Hertz accepts licences from some countries without one, such as the USA, Canada and Australia, but we still advise the IDP because of the law. Alamo and SIXT ask for an IDP with any licence not printed in the Roman alphabet
- Documents: Target Rent and U-Save want inbound and outbound tickets in the renter’s name, Hertz a return flight ticket and Ecovia your flight details. Felirent accepts only plastic card licences, not paper ones

Verona, Venice Marco Polo or Bergamo: which airport should you rent a car at?
Verona Airport is about 128 km by road from Venice Marco Polo Airport and about 107 km from Bergamo Airport, both on the A4. Prices at the three airports were in the same range in our data, and November was the cheapest month at all three. Verona is the closest of the three to Lake Garda and to Bolzano on the A22. Venice Marco Polo is closer to Cortina d’Ampezzo.
| What we compared | Verona (VRN) | Venice Marco Polo (VCE) | Bergamo (BGY) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance by road from Verona Airport | – | about 128 km | about 107 km |
| Offers for one week in November | 818 from 27 companies | 912 from 28 companies | 1,154 from 41 companies |
| Average price per day, November and July | about 17 and 45 EUR | about 15 and 43 EUR | about 14 and 47 EUR |
At Verona the rental offices are a short covered walk from arrivals, about 50-200 m. At Venice Marco Polo they are on level 3 of the P1 car park, about 300 m along a covered walkway. At Verona 10 of our 16 companies accept a debit card, and at Venice Marco Polo 11 of 13. At both airports Locauto takes no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation, and in our November searches its Toyota Aygo cost about 105 EUR a week at Verona and about 102 EUR at Venice Marco Polo. Bergamo had the most offers of the three. For a December trip, note that in our data December at Bergamo averaged about 49 EUR a day, against about 26 EUR at Verona.
Driving from Verona Airport: the ZTL, Lake Garda and the Dolomites
From the airport, the SS12 and the Tangenziale Ovest (SS62) take you into Verona. The Arena, in the centre, is about 12 km away, and Google Maps showed no tolls on this route. It showed about 15 minutes when we checked in light evening traffic, so allow longer during the day. The A4 towards Lake Garda, Bergamo and Venice and the A22 towards Bolzano and the Brenner Pass are toll motorways.
Verona: the ZTL and parking
The historic centre of Verona is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone, and electronic gates monitor every entry. Since 28 October 2024 there are no free-access hours. Only residents of the city and the province of Verona can book an entry, so a visitor in a rental car cannot drive in unless exempt. Hotel guests inside the ZTL can enter if they give their plate number to the hotel, so send it before you arrive. Guests of holiday flats and other short lets do not get this exemption. A fine reaches you through the rental company, which can add its own admin fee. Check the current rules on the Comune di Verona ZTL page.
Leave the car outside the centre. Paid car parks close to it include Cittadella (750 spaces), Parking Italia, the Arena multi-storey car park, Saba Arena on Via M. Bentegodi, Tribunale and Via Campo Marzo. Free car parks include Piazzale Castel San Pietro, Porta Palio on Viale Galliano (about 100 spaces, about 15 minutes on foot from Castelvecchio), the Bentegodi stadium (about 5,000 spaces, with buses 11, 12 and 13 to the Arena) and Piazzale Guardini by Porta Nuova station. For street parking you can pay with the StrisceBlu app.

Lake Garda by car
Lake Garda is the closest big day trip. Peschiera del Garda is about 22 km from the airport and Sirmione about 34 km, both on the A4, which has tolls. The historic centre of Sirmione is closed to cars without a specific authorisation, so park outside it and walk in. Malcesine, on the east shore, is about 63 km away on the A22 and the SR249. Verified renters at Verona Airport often name Lake Garda towns such as Bardolino and Lazise among their trips.
In Sirmione, the Monte Baldo car park is open 24 hours. It charges by the hour or by the day, and prices are higher in high season, from 1 March to 1 November and over Christmas and New Year.

The Dolomites and winter equipment on the A22
Bolzano is about 151 km up the A22. Cortina d’Ampezzo is about 256 km away on the Pedemontana Veneta (SPV), or about 265 km on the A4 and A27, and all these routes have tolls. From 15 November to 15 April, the whole A22 from Modena to the Brenner Pass requires winter tyres fitted or snow chains on board, even when there is no snow. In the provinces of Trento and Bolzano the same period applies on all state and provincial roads outside built-up areas. On Veneto state roads at risk of snow, winter tyres or chains were required from 15 November 2025 to 15 April 2026. We could not confirm the rules for the provincial roads around Verona or the roads around Cortina, so check them before you go.
Most of our companies’ conditions say that winter tyres are mandatory in South Tyrol from 15 November to 15 April. Locauto, Alamo, National and Ecovia include snow chains in the price in this period. In our November search, only 6 offers were marked as having winter tyres, all from Sicily By Car, and the cheapest offer with winter tyres was about 149 EUR a week. Ask for winter tyres when you book a winter rental for the mountains.

Autorentwiz tip: this tip comes from our search and the rental conditions, not from our customer data. All 16 companies we recommend at Verona allow trips to Austria and Switzerland, but the fee ranges from nothing to 150 EUR. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, Keddy and Sicily By Car charge no fee. Maggiore charges 28.80 EUR, Hertz and Dollar 30 EUR, and SIXT and Flizzr 50 EUR. Target Rent charges 70 EUR, and the highest fees are at Ecovia (100 EUR), Felirent (105 EUR), Optimo Rent (140 EUR) and U-Save (150 EUR). Target Rent, Felirent and U-Save have many of the cheapest offers, so add the fee before you compare prices.
All but Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and National want written permission, and Maggiore and Target Rent also want extra cover. None of the offers we checked mentions motorway vignettes, so check the rules for your route before you cross the border. Send us your route on Messenger, and we will compare the total price with the border fee for your dates.

Yes, with a debit card at 10 of our 16 companies, including Locauto with no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR card authorisation, and Maggiore with 200 EUR. Our search found no deals at Verona without any card at pick-up, so the main driver still needs a physical card from a traditional bank.
Yes, with Locauto. It asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on a debit or a credit card at pick-up, at its office in the car rental building, open until 23:00. Apart from Locauto, our search found no offers without a deposit among the companies we recommend. Among companies that take a deposit, the lowest are Maggiore, at 200 EUR on a debit or a credit card, and Sicily By Car, at 200 EUR on small cars with a credit card only.
It is usually worth it, because the excess at Verona was about 1,200-2,800 EUR at most companies in our search, and up to 4,200 EUR at Felirent and 4,758 EUR on a Peugeot 5008 at Maggiore. Full coverage added to the online booking is the cheaper option, but the normal deposit stays and you claim any damage back from the insurer. The company’s cover at the desk costs more and removes the excess at once.
The offices are on the ground floor outside the Arrivals Terminal, a short covered walk away. Maggiore and Optimo Rent give their desk in the Arrivals terminal. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, SIXT, Flizzr, Sicily By Car, Hertz, Dollar and Ecovia are in the car rental area about 100-200 m from arrivals, and Keddy also lists its desk at the airport. Target Rent, Felirent and U-Save pick you up by shuttle.
We found 29 companies with ratings at Verona Airport, and 27 had offers in our November search. We recommend 16, all rated 8.0 or higher with a staff score of 8.0 or higher: Maggiore, Locauto, Alamo, Target Rent, Optimo Rent, Felirent, Enterprise, Dollar, Flizzr, Sicily By Car, National, SIXT, Ecovia, Keddy, Hertz and U-Save.
No. The 16 companies we recommend at Verona list cards from online-only banks, such as Revolut, as not accepted. Keddy names “Revolut Credit” among its accepted credit cards, but its conditions also refuse cards from online-only banks, so we would not count on it. Our search found no deals without a card at pick-up, so you need a card from a traditional bank in the main driver’s name.
Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, SIXT, Flizzr and Keddy work until 23:00 every day, Sicily By Car until 22:59 and Maggiore until 22:30. Felirent and Ecovia close at 22:00, Optimo Rent at 21:30, Hertz and Dollar at 20:00, Target Rent at 19:00 and U-Save at 18:00, or 13:00 on Sundays.
November, at about 17 EUR a day on average across all offers, 47% below the yearly average of about 31 EUR. March is the next cheapest, at about 20 EUR. July is the most expensive month, at about 45 EUR a day.
Usually not. Since 28 October 2024 the ZTL in the historic centre has no free-access hours, and only residents of the city and the province of Verona can book an entry. Hotel guests inside the ZTL can enter if they give their plate number to the hotel. Otherwise park outside the centre, for example at the free Bentegodi stadium car park, and take bus 11, 12 or 13 to the Arena.
From 15 November to 15 April the whole A22 requires winter tyres fitted or snow chains on board, even without snow, and the same period applies on state and provincial roads outside built-up areas in the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Locauto, Alamo, National and Ecovia include snow chains in the price in this period. In our November search, only Sicily By Car had offers marked with winter tyres.
Yes, all 16 companies we recommend allow both. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, National, Keddy and Sicily By Car charge no fee. Maggiore charges 28.80 EUR, Hertz and Dollar 30 EUR, SIXT and Flizzr 50 EUR, Target Rent 70 EUR, Ecovia 100 EUR, Felirent 105 EUR, Optimo Rent 140 EUR and U-Save 150 EUR. All except Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and National want written permission.
The minimum age is 18 at SIXT and Flizzr, 19 at Target Rent, Felirent, Ecovia and U-Save, and on small cars at Maggiore, Locauto, Alamo and Sicily By Car, and 21 at Optimo Rent, Enterprise, Dollar, National, Keddy and Hertz. Bigger cars need 21 at some companies, and the 9-seat Volkswagen Caravelle needs 25 at Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and National. Most companies add a young driver fee under 25.
Not with an EU licence, and none of the 16 companies we recommend asks for one. A UK photocard licence needs no IDP under Italian law, but Locauto, Sicily By Car, Target Rent, Optimo Rent and SIXT still ask for one with a UK licence or from drivers who live in the UK. With any other licence from outside the EU, Italian law requires an IDP or an official Italian translation, so bring an IDP with your licence.
Through Autorentwiz: our search shows the same companies, cars and rental conditions as Discovercars, with our discount applied, so the same car costs less. At Verona Airport we recommend 16 companies. You can also get a free consultation by car rental experts on Messenger, and the discount is the same either way.
For trips to Lake Garda or the Dolomites, the airport is the easier choice: 13 of the 16 companies we recommend have their office at the airport, a short walk from arrivals. For days in Verona itself you do not need a car, because visitors’ cars cannot enter the ZTL in the historic centre. The Verona Air Link bus takes about 15 minutes to Porta Nuova station and costs 6 EUR one way. It runs every 20 minutes at peak times and every 40 minutes at other times.
Target Rent and U-Save want inbound and outbound tickets in the renter’s name, and Target Rent says renters without them will be denied service. Both take credit cards only, and Target Rent closes at 19:00 and U-Save at 18:00, or 13:00 on Sundays. Dollar and Keddy hold your car for only 29 minutes after the booked time, and Dollar asks for a separate fuel deposit. Maggiore blocks only 200 EUR, but its excess goes up to 4,758 EUR.
At Verona Airport, check the deposit and the fuel rules in the offer conditions before you book, and film the car from all sides at pick-up and at return. Locauto asks for no deposit, only a symbolic 0,01 EUR authorisation on your card. The other companies block 200 to 1,000 EUR. If you already have full insurance, you do not need to buy the rental company’s insurance at the desk as well. Before you return the car, fill up at the Q8 (Dalla Bernardina) station on Via Aeroporto, the airport road, about 0.8 km north of the rental area. We found different opening hours for it in two sources, so check them on Google Maps before a late return. The Tamoil station on Via dell’Artigianato 100 in Sommacampagna, about 2 km west of the terminal, was listed on Google Maps as open 24 hours.
