Car Rental at Alghero Airport (AHO): Complete 2026 Guide

Everything we tell our customers before they rent a car at Alghero Airport: which companies we recommend, what each one blocks on your card, the ferry rule that voids your insurance, and why Sardinia sells out weeks early.

Alghero Airport (AHO), officially Aeroporto di Alghero-Fertilia “Riviera del Corallo”, is the main gateway to northern Sardinia and one of the busiest car rental pick-up points on the island. Almost nobody explores this part of Sardinia without a car. The beaches around Stintino, the coast road down to Bosa and the hill towns inland are difficult to reach any other way. Alghero is one of the airports our customers ask us about most, so we know exactly where travellers get caught out here. This guide covers where the rental desks are, which companies we recommend and why, and what each one blocks on your card. Two things in particular ruin more Sardinian holidays than anything else: arriving with the wrong card for the deposit, and booking a car that is not allowed on a ferry. Both are covered below.

Short on time? Here is the summary:

  • Lowest deposit: Locauto, from 0,01 EUR
  • Debit card accepted: Locauto, Maggiore, Avis, Keddy and NOLAUTO.IT
  • Credit card only: Rentsmart24 and Sicily by Car
  • Taking a ferry off the island: only Locauto and Sicily by Car allow it
  • Flying into the other side of Sardinia? See our guides to car rental at Olbia Airport and car rental at Cagliari Airport
  • Travelling in June or July: book early, Sardinia sells out weeks in advance
  • Cheapest option: usually Rentsmart24, collected at ParkinGO in front of the terminal

Car rental company locations at Alghero Airport (AHO)

Alghero Airport is small, which works in your favour. There is one terminal, arrivals and departures sit side by side, and nothing is more than a couple of minutes’ walk from the baggage belt. Compared to Milan or Rome, picking up a car here is a simple process. The airport operator publishes its own terminal and transport information on the official Alghero Airport website if you want to check anything before you fly.

Car rental desks inside the terminal

Five of the companies we recommend have their desks inside the terminal building. Because the airport is compact, all of them are a short walk from the baggage belt and there is no shuttle involved. Collect your luggage, walk through to the arrivals hall, and the counters are right there.

  • Locauto
  • Avis
  • Maggiore
  • Keddy
  • Sicily by Car

Whichever company you booked with, the counter process is the same and it is where most disputes start. Our guide to a flawless car rental pick-up covers what to check before you sign anything and drive away.

Off-airport pick-up, and why it usually costs less

Rentsmart24 and NOLAUTO.IT are based outside the airport grounds. On booking sites this normally shows up as “shuttle bus”, and a lot of travellers see those words and immediately scroll past. At Alghero, that reaction usually costs them money, because the prices from these two are often noticeably lower.

Rentsmart24 is the clearest example. Their rental desk is at ParkinGO, just outside the airport and directly in front of the main entrance. You walk out of arrivals and it is right in front of you. Have a look for yourself:

Open the ParkinGO desk in Google Street View and you will see how short the walk actually is.

Autorentwiz tip: Not every off-airport location is hard to reach. Booking sites use the same “shuttle bus” label for a desk you can see from the terminal door and for a depot twenty minutes away in an industrial estate. At Alghero it is the first kind. Check the actual address before you dismiss a cheaper offer, because the label tells you nothing about the walk.

The lesson is simple. Do not filter out off-airport suppliers at Alghero without checking where they actually are first. What matters is the distance, not the label on the booking site.

There are dozens of suppliers operating at Alghero Airport. We do not list all of them, because most of them are not worth your money. Our team goes through the terms and conditions of each company, checks their deposit rules, fuel policies and what happens when something goes wrong, and then recommends the ones we would book ourselves. These seven are the ones that pass.

Car rental deposits by supplier at Alghero Airport, ranging from 0,01 EUR with Locauto to 1500 EUR with NOLAUTO.IT

Deposit ranges depend on the car category and your rental dates. Always check the conditions on your specific offer.

If you only have a debit card

This is the single most common problem we deal with. Out of the Alghero requests where we recorded the card type, 54% of travellers had a debit card and no credit card at all. The rental industry still quietly assumes everyone has a credit card in the main driver’s name, and people find out otherwise at the counter. Our guide to car rental in Italy compares deposits and debit card rules airport by airport.

Locauto is our first recommendation here, and it is not close. They accept debit cards and their deposit starts at 0,01 EUR, which means effectively nothing is blocked on your card. Maggiore and Avis also accept debit cards with a deposit between 200 and 800 EUR, which is manageable for most people. Keddy and NOLAUTO.IT accept debit cards too, but their deposits climb to 1000 and 1500 EUR respectively, so check your available balance before you travel.

One thing worth saying clearly: Revolut, Wise, Monese and similar digital bank cards are not accepted by rental companies in Sardinia, regardless of whether they are branded Visa or Mastercard. Bring a card issued by a traditional bank.

The rules are the same across the rest of the country, and we have written them up in detail in our guide to renting a car in Italy with a debit card.

If you have a credit card

A credit card opens up the whole list, including the two companies that will not take debit. Rentsmart24 is usually the cheapest option at Alghero and their desk is at ParkinGO in front of the terminal, but they block 650 to 750 EUR and they require a credit card. Sicily by Car sits in the middle with a 200 to 500 EUR deposit, and they are one of only two companies on this list that will let you take the car on a ferry.

Not sure which one fits your dates and your card? Send us a message and we will check the live prices and conditions for your exact trip. It is free, there is no obligation, and it takes us a few minutes.

Deposits at Alghero Airport, and why they vary so much

Look at the table above again and notice the range. At the same airport, in the same week, one company blocks one cent and another blocks up to 1500 EUR. That is not a small difference in the fine print, it is the difference between a holiday that starts smoothly and one that starts with an argument at a counter.

What a deposit actually does to your card

The deposit is money frozen on your card for the whole rental. You do not lose it, but you cannot spend it either. If you are travelling on a debit card with a normal current account balance, a 1500 EUR block can leave you unable to pay for hotels, restaurants or fuel for the rest of the trip. This is why we ask every customer what kind of card they have before we send any offers.

Driving from Alghero Airport: distances and the ZTL

The airport sits on the Strada Provinciale 44 at Fertilia, north of Alghero itself. Getting out of it is easy, there is one road and no complicated junctions. These are the drives most of our customers make:

  • Alghero town centre: about 10 km, roughly 15 minutes
  • Capo Caccia and Neptune’s Grotto: about 23 km, roughly 30 minutes
  • Stintino and La Pelosa beach: about 50 km, roughly 45 minutes
  • Bosa: about 55 km. The direct route takes roughly an hour, but the coast road from Alghero is 45 km of bends and deserves at least an hour and a half
  • Sassari: about 30 km, roughly 30 minutes

The coast road to Bosa

The coast road south to Bosa, the SP105, is one of the best drives in Italy and it is the main reason people rent a car here rather than relying on buses. It is also the reason a small car is usually a better choice than a large one.

The Alghero ZTL and how the fines reach you

Autorentwiz tip: do not drive into Alghero’s old town.

The walled historic centre is a Zona a Traffico Limitato, a limited traffic zone enforced by cameras. There is no barrier and nobody stops you at the time. A camera reads your number plate and the fine, usually between 83 and 160 EUR, arrives months later through your rental company, who add an administration fee of their own on top.

The trap at Alghero is that the zone reaches beyond the streets that obviously look like an old town. Roads such as Via Mazzini look like ordinary streets lined with parked cars, and drivers enter them without realising. Park in one of the car parks outside the walls and walk in. The old town is small and you will see far more of it on foot.

If your hotel is inside the zone, ask them to register your number plate before you arrive. Most properties inside the walls can do this, but they need to do it in advance.

The European Commission’s Urban Access Regulations database keeps a record of Alghero’s restrictions if you want to check the current rules yourself.

Taking your rental car on the ferry from Sardinia

Sardinia is an island, and a lot of people plan to take the ferry across to Corsica from Santa Teresa Gallura, or over to the Italian mainland. This is where rental agreements catch people out, because most companies simply do not allow their cars to leave the island.

Which companies allow ferry travel

Of the companies we recommend at Alghero, only Locauto and Sicily by Car permit ferry travel, and neither charges an extra fee for it. Rentsmart24, NOLAUTO.IT, Avis, Maggiore and Keddy do not allow it at all.

Autorentwiz tip: If a ferry is anywhere in your plans, decide that before you book, not after. Taking a car onto a ferry against the rental agreement voids your insurance completely. If anything happens to the vehicle, from a scratch to a theft, you are personally liable for all of it.

Returning the car and where to fill up

Fuel policies differ between companies at Alghero. Some work on full to full, others on same to same. Either way the practical outcome is identical: you will need to stop at a petrol station before you hand the car back, and if you turn up short you will pay the company’s own refuelling rate, which is always well above the pump price.

The nearest petrol station to Alghero Airport

The closest petrol station to the airport is the Eni station on the SS127bis at Fertilia, roughly 4 km south of the terminal. It is the last sensible stop before drop-off, and it is also where a lot of our customers run into trouble.

See the station on Google Maps if you want to check the exact turning before you drive it.

Servito or fai da te: which pump lane to use

Autorentwiz tip: learn how the pump works before you are standing at it at five in the morning.

Italian stations have two lanes. Servito means an attendant fills the car for you, and it costs around 0,20 EUR more per litre. Fai da te is self service. If there is an attendant on duty, use them, because they handle the payment and you avoid everything below.

The problem is that attended service keeps Italian working hours. Most stations in Sardinia close on Sundays and for a break in the middle of the day. If your flight is early or your return falls on a Sunday, self service will be your only option, so know how it works in advance.

Self service machines block roughly 100 EUR on your card regardless of how much fuel you actually take, and that money comes back a few days later. If you are already carrying a 650 EUR rental deposit on the same card, this is a second hold you did not plan for.

Two things to check before you confirm anything. Make sure the pump number on the screen matches the pump you are standing at, because if you pick the wrong one you will pay for somebody else’s fuel and there is no way to get it back. And keep the receipt, otherwise you have nothing to argue with.

When to book a rental car in Sardinia

Sardinia is not like mainland Italy when it comes to availability. The island has a limited number of cars, demand is heavily concentrated into a short summer season, and once the fleet is gone it is gone. Prices do not just rise, the cars genuinely run out.

Autorentwiz tip: Sardinia is prone to sell-outs. In June and July, cars at Alghero can be completely sold out as early as two to three weeks before your travel dates. If you are flying in during the summer, organise the car as soon as your flights are booked. Leaving it until the last week is how people end up paying triple, or driving away in something far bigger than they wanted.

Most rental bookings can be cancelled free of charge, so booking early costs you nothing and protects you against exactly this. If the price drops later, you can rebook. We go through that trick and several others in our guide to saving money on car rental.

FAQ car rental at Alghero Airport

Can I rent a car at Alghero Airport without a credit card?

Yes. Locauto, Maggiore, Avis, Keddy and NOLAUTO.IT all accept debit cards at Alghero Airport. Locauto is the easiest option because the deposit starts at 0,01 EUR. Rentsmart24 and Sicily by Car require a credit card in the main driver’s name. Digital bank cards such as Revolut, Wise and Monese are not accepted by any of them.

How big is the deposit for a rental car at Alghero Airport?

It depends entirely on the company. Locauto blocks as little as 0,01 EUR. Sicily by Car takes 200 to 500 EUR, Maggiore and Avis 200 to 800 EUR, Rentsmart24 650 to 750 EUR, Keddy 800 to 1000 EUR, and NOLAUTO.IT between 1000 and 1500 EUR. The exact amount also depends on the car category and your rental dates.

Can I take a rental car from Alghero on a ferry?

Only with Locauto or Sicily by Car, and neither charges a fee for it. Rentsmart24, NOLAUTO.IT, Avis, Maggiore and Keddy do not permit ferry travel. Taking a car on a ferry without permission voids your insurance entirely, so confirm this before booking rather than at the port.

Where do I pick up a Rentsmart24 car at Alghero Airport?

At the ParkinGO building, just outside the airport and directly in front of the main entrance. Booking sites list it as shuttle bus, which puts a lot of people off, but at Alghero that only means the desk sits outside the airport grounds. It is a short walk from arrivals, so do not let the label talk you out of a cheaper offer.

Can I drive into Alghero old town with a rental car?

No, not without a permit. The walled historic centre is a ZTL, a camera-enforced limited traffic zone. Fines run from about 83 to 160 EUR and reach you months later through your rental company, with an administration fee added. The zone extends beyond the streets that obviously look like an old town, so park outside the walls and walk in. If your hotel is inside the zone, ask them to register your number plate in advance.

How far is Alghero Airport from the town centre?

About 10 km, or roughly 15 minutes by car. The airport is at Fertilia, north of Alghero, on the Strada Provinciale 44. Stintino and La Pelosa beach are about 50 km, roughly 45 minutes. Bosa is about 55 km, roughly an hour by the direct route or an hour and a half if you take the scenic coast road.

How far in advance should I book a car in Sardinia?

As early as you can, especially for June and July. Alghero regularly sells out two to three weeks before the travel dates in high season. Most bookings are free to cancel, so there is no downside to reserving early and rebooking if the price falls.

Where is the nearest petrol station to Alghero Airport?

The Eni station on the SS127bis at Fertilia, about 4 km south of the terminal. Use the attended lane if you can, because self service machines block around 100 EUR on your card regardless of how much fuel you take. Many Sardinian stations close on Sundays and during the middle of the day.

Can I rent a car at Alghero Airport with just a debit card?

Yes. Locauto, Maggiore, Avis, Keddy and NOLAUTO.IT accept debit cards, and Locauto blocks as little as 0,01 EUR. The card must be a physical card in the main driver’s name: Revolut, Wise and Monese are not accepted.

Can I rent a car at Alghero Airport with no deposit?

Not with a true no-deposit deal on our Alghero list. The closest option is Locauto, which blocks as little as 0,01 EUR on a debit card. The other companies block 200 to 1500 EUR.

Should I rent a car at Alghero Airport with full insurance?

Usually yes. Basic cover is included, but you still pay the excess if the car is damaged or stolen. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheapest way to cover it: it works by refund, and the deposit is still blocked. The rental company’s own insurance at the desk removes the excess directly but costs the most.
