Car Rental at Bergamo Airport (BGY): No Deposit, No Credit Card and Full Insurance

Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is Milan’s low-cost airport, 5 km from Bergamo and about 50 km east of Milan, and the start of most road trips to Lake Como, Lake Iseo and Lake Garda. For one week in November we found 1,154 offers from 41 companies. Most rental desks are in the Arrivals hall, but many cars wait in car park P3, a short free shuttle ride away, and five local companies pick you up by shuttle from car park P1 East. This guide to car rental at Bergamo Airport covers the 16 companies we recommend, all rated 8.0 or higher, which of them take a debit card, where each desk and car park is, what the deposit will be, what a rental day costs in each month and how to drive to the lakes and Switzerland without a fine. Every company was checked against its rental conditions in October 2026.

We analyse every supplier at every airport, because each branch has its own process: the same brand can run a smooth pick-up at one airport and a slow one at the next. At Bergamo, 16 companies passed our check, all rated 8.0 or higher by verified renters. Eleven of them have their desk in the Arrivals hall, from Locauto, SIXT and Sicily By Car to Enterprise, Dollar and Hertz. Of the customers who asked us about Bergamo and named their card type, 60% had only a debit card, and here that is easy: Locauto blocks only 0,01 EUR on a debit card, and eight more companies accept one. Locauto stands out: its rental conditions set the deposit at 0,01 EUR on every car class, with a debit or a credit card. Alamo and Enterprise block 500 EUR, Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty 700 EUR, Keddy 800 EUR, and SIXT about 520-590 EUR on small cars. Three companies drop to a very low deposit when you take their own zero-excess cover in the price: Centauro to about 40 EUR, and Sicily By Car and GaldieriRent to 100 EUR. Dollar, Goldcar, Key’n Go and Centauro also take a separate fuel deposit at pick-up, which you get back when you return the car full.

Most desks are in the car rental area of the Arrivals hall: when you come out of the arrivals gate, turn left and follow the car rental signs. SIXT is the exception: turn right and walk along the hallway, and its desk is on the left. You sign the contract at the desk, but several companies keep their cars in car park P3, about 800 m away. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, Goldcar, Keddy and Key’n Go send you there by free shuttle from stop 8 at Exit 1, which runs about every 10-20 minutes, or you follow the signs “P3 car park – autonoleggi car rental” on foot.

This is one of the most common questions we get about Bergamo. You do not need to book the shuttle in advance. Last Minute Rent, GaldieriRent, RentSmart24, Ciao Rent Car and Centauro work from offices 1-3 km from the terminal, and their shuttles leave from car park P1 East. Leave the terminal through Exit 4, turn left and follow the pedestrian walkway for 100-300 m to the bus shelter at P1 East. RentSmart24 and Ciao Rent Car use the ParkinGO GO1 bus, Last Minute Rent and GaldieriRent the ParkinGO GO2 bus, and Centauro its own minibus during office hours. If the bus is not there, call the number in your booking voucher. On the way back, the shuttle takes you from the office to Departures, so leave at least 30 minutes for the return.

Autorentwiz tip: if you land late or travel with small children, choose a company with a desk in the Arrivals hall. With a debit card, Locauto is the simplest choice: 0,01 EUR deposit, open 07:30-23:00, and a shuttle to its cars in P3 every 10 minutes.

Most companies open at 08:00, and that catches out customers with an early flight home. One customer we helped had a 07:45 flight, while the company’s office opened at 08:00. If you fly out early, choose RentSmart24 (24 hours), Centauro (from 07:00) or Locauto, Alamo and Enterprise (from 07:30), or ask the company when you book whether you can return the car out of hours. Some companies offer it for an extra fee, and then nobody checks the car with you, so film it at the drop-off. Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty, Last Minute Rent and GaldieriRent close at 20:00, Ciao Rent Car charges an out-of-hours fee after 21:00 and RentSmart24 75 EUR after 23:00. If your flight is late, Centauro holds the car for 12 hours, Goldcar for 4 hours and Sicily By Car for 2 hours, but Dollar, Keddy and Key’n Go only for 29 minutes. Add your flight number to the booking, and if you land later, change the pick-up time before you fly.

The drop-off instructions in most bookings only say to clarify them at pick-up, and that is exactly what you should do. One group of our customers spent 10 minutes at the car park barrier working out where to return the car, because the booking did not say which car park, and they were not the only ones. Ask at the desk which car park to return to, and take a photo of the sign when you collect the car. Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, Goldcar, Keddy and Key’n Go cars usually go back to car park P3. Centauro cars go back to its own car park, and its shuttle takes you to Departures.

The nearest petrol station to Bergamo Airport is the Iper Station at the Oriocenter shopping centre on Via Portico, about 600 m west of car park P3. It has plenty of pumps and good prices, so it is also a good place to fill up at the start of a trip if your car has a same-to-same fuel policy. Fill up, keep the receipt and return the car during office hours if you can, so an agent checks it and signs it off.

Yes, and Bergamo is one of the easier Italian airports for it. In the Arrivals hall, Locauto blocks only 0,01 EUR, Alamo and Enterprise 500 EUR, SIXT about 520-590 EUR on small cars, Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty 700 EUR and Keddy 800 EUR. Off the airport, Centauro accepts debit cards with a deposit of 990-1,500 EUR, or about 40 EUR with its own cover. Sicily By Car, Goldcar, Key’n Go, Last Minute Rent, GaldieriRent, RentSmart24 and Ciao Rent Car take credit cards only. The card must be a physical Visa or Mastercard in the main driver’s name, with the number printed on it. None of the 16 companies we recommend at Bergamo accepts cards from online-only banks such as Revolut, Wise or Monese: all of them list these cards as not accepted in their rental conditions, and most also refuse prepaid cards and cards in a phone wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. The only option is a deal with no card needed at pick-up. In our November search the only such deals were 7-9 seat vans from Ciao Rent Car, from about 1,500 EUR for 7 days. You pay for the rental online, and you must show your flight tickets in and out at the desk. For a smaller car, order a physical debit card from a traditional bank before the trip, or let a travel companion with such a card be the main driver: with a debit card, Locauto then blocks only 0,01 EUR. Message us with your dates and we check which deals work with a Revolut card.

The closest thing to no deposit is Locauto: its rental conditions set the deposit at 0,01 EUR, it accepts debit cards, and its desk is in the Arrivals hall. The other low deposits come with the company’s own zero-excess cover: Centauro then blocks about 40 EUR, and Sicily By Car and GaldieriRent 100 EUR. Full coverage bought online with your booking is the cheaper way to cover the excess, and the company’s own cover at the desk is the most expensive one. Every rental price in Italy includes basic insurance with an excess: the amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In our search the excess at Bergamo was about 1,700 EUR on a typical offer and up to about 2,600 EUR on bigger cars. With full coverage the deposit is still blocked: you pay for any damage first and get the money back afterwards. Customers ask us why the desk still blocks a deposit of 1,000 EUR when they booked full coverage, and why the agent offers them more insurance. That is how it works: the desk cover removes the excess directly and lowers the deposit, while online full coverage refunds you later. If you already have full coverage, you can decline the desk offer. Film the car at pick-up and at return, as we explain in our car rental pick-up tips. If a dispute starts, message us with the contract: we support you before, during and after the rental.

Across all offers, car rental at Bergamo Airport costs about 27 EUR a day on average over the year: about 14 EUR a day for November pick-ups and about 47-49 EUR a day in July and December. January, March and October are almost as cheap as November, while July and December are the dearest months, followed by June, August and September. November comes out about 50% below the yearly average. Most of our customers rent here for 3 to 7 days.

Prices at Bergamo can change several times a day. Book early, but not more than about 8 months ahead, when many companies have not published their prices yet. Most offers can be cancelled for free up to 48 hours before pick-up, so if the price drops after you book, you can rebook at the lower price. Message us every one or two weeks after booking, and we check the market for you.

These are the lowest daily prices we saw for each car type from the companies we recommend, for one week in November, the cheapest month. A small SUV cost about the same as a medium car, and automatics started at about 6-8 EUR a day. 7-9 seat vans are expensive here, so families who need one should book early.

The airport sits right next to the A4 motorway between Milan and Venice, with the Bergamo exit a few minutes away. Milan is about 50 km west, Lake Iseo about 30 km north-east, Lake Como at Lecco about 40 km north-west and Lake Garda at Sirmione about 90 km east. The A4 is a toll motorway: take a ticket at the entrance and pay by card at the exit. What catches renters out are the restricted traffic zones (ZTL): cameras record every plate, and the fine arrives weeks later through the rental company.

Bergamo’s Città Alta, the walled upper town, is closed to cars without a permit all day, every day, and the wider Città Alta and Colli zone is a ZTL on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 24:00. Since December 2025, cameras also check how long cars stay inside. Rental cars have no permit, so park in Città Bassa and take the funicular up. In Milan, Area C covers the centre from Monday to Friday, 07:30-19:30: you pay 7.50 EUR a day, online or by phone, by midnight of the following day. Check the current rules on the City of Milan Area C ticket page. In Bergamo a ZTL fine is about 100 EUR, and the rental company adds its own admin fee.

Lake Iseo is the closest lake, about 30 minutes from the airport, and Lecco on Lake Como about 45 minutes. Lake Garda is about an hour east on the A4.

Lugano in Switzerland is about 1 hour 15 minutes away. Swiss motorways need a vignette, 40 CHF for the calendar year, which you buy online as an e-vignette for the car’s plate before you cross. Check first that your company allows it: Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise, Sicily By Car and Keddy let you drive to Switzerland for free, the others charge 30-98 EUR, and Ciao Rent Car and Key’n Go do not allow it. In winter, many mountain roads require winter tyres or snow chains: Locauto and Alamo include snow chains in the price from 15 November to 15 April.
